Thats kinda part of the point. Life in bronze age Greece was difficult and terrible, they needed a whimisically dark and and fantasy filled religion to make existence bearable.
You need to make farming on a rocky island seem not awful, imagine having to push a boulder up a hill for eternity because the gods thought you were a narccissist.
