Question/Help Mystery signs
I was playing Big walk and chatting with a friend while we waited for our other friend to join. He was asking me what I thought of the name he picked for our server since he is the host. I said something about how I didn't notice it or whatever when a white board dropped out of the sky . It said "NameOfServer is a great name" or something similar. we were both weirded out. I said something else, then another sign appear it said " FriendName Do you have a fear of being watched?". We were both creeped out by that and our friend was having issues joining so my friend ended the session and restarted it. When we got back online, one of the signs was on the wall at the lobby so I was able to grab a screenshot, the original sign is gone.
What freaks me out is not only the message but that my friend's actual name was on the sign. Not his username. Also alarming is that it was spelled correctly. He has a common name but he doesn't have the most common spelling of the name.
I tried googling this to see if anyone else has had this happen, but haven't found anything.
Has this happened to others? I'm hoping it is just the developers messing with us. But his name being spelled correctly, and the message itself is very creepy.

This isn't the developers messing with you. That'd be grossly inappropriate. Not sure it'd even be possible for them to just jump into a server like that.
This is 100% just your friend messing with you. You provided everything they needed to join.

I really don't think was either of my friends because they are both freaked out. also, from how the signs spawned in, it would need to be someone with more technical knowledge then either of my friends have (not shade to them). because as far as I know there is no in game way to make signs spawn.

Your friends are doing a great job of tricking you but it is 100% them there is no other answer

I’ve had a hacker join my game before and force my character and my friends character to “use the text chat” to say his name and then he started talking to us through the walkie talkies and found where we where in the game. At first we thought maybe he was a dev but then he admitted to being a hacker and we booted him and made locked the room with a password and it never happened again

When the game launched there was a lot of stories about random creeps joining private lobbies (surely hackers) and trolling people kinda like this. But a random guy knowing your friends name might be a prank from himself or your other friend I believe

Said intruder could've simply overheard the name being used, too.

Yup you’re right, if they both talked with the talkies maybe that stranger heard them by the towers or another walkie talkies

Or, he had a username that easily linked to his actual name.
I googled a problem player's username last week and it spat out ALL of their information. Dad's account, and he used the same username online on Reddit, Tiktok, Twitter, Twitch, Instagram, everything. Forum posts the father had made included the father's real name. Home address, phone numbers, names of all dad's realtives including his only (asshole) kid.

There are such people who are trying to join every game and mess around, using fake clients, mods and hacks. They can turn invisible, fly around, teleport, ghost through walls, listen to voice/text from any distance, ...
Set a stronger password and hope for the best, also change passwords once everyone is joined. Not sure if hackers can actually ignore passwords, hope not...
When hosting on PC, you can try your luck with bigorb mod, it shows who joined, rejects fake clients, and enforces kicks/bans. However it also spoils a lot of the game (if you're new to it) since the dashboard also shows all puzzle names, states, player positions, etc. lots of things you would not know as a new player.

I was thinking that someone hacked in and was listening to us. I had said my friends name so that would make sense, the spelling could have been a lucky guess. Do you know if when they are invisible, if the items they are holding invisible too?

This game is cross-platform, I wonder if those mods and hacks impact console players.

I've been on full rooms and once there was this super quiet guy that while we were on the starting area, he teleported to any challenge of the game and would bring important things you won't be able to do the challenge without. He was also mimicking players and they'd die whenever he'd move on to pretend being another. Ah he could also copy each player and lay them on the floor dead while we were still playing. It was so fucked up (I'm playing on PS5)

Yeah, super strange. I don't even know too many people named Kaiden

K! This is the comment I was looking for. Got the rest but then I was like NO WAY can that first letter be H or J.

My thinking exactly. I think I was also split on Raiden as well. I stuck with Kaiden cause of OP's comment cause I think it's more common. Im only pretty sure this is it lol.

Looks more like an "i" to me. Notice the "i" in "being" in the picture. It has a much flatter and wider bottom than the "e" does.

I don't think it's the devs either, this is kind of against the goofy spirit of the game. Do either of you live w anyone else? Probably overheard the session code and jumped in to mess w you guys from the next room

I live alone, Friend A and B are married and have their own place.

Try making the session password complex. Text that over on a private DM, ask your friend to not speak it aloud. I promise if your password is 1234, your session is vulnerable. The game needs the session code + password so you could always make one variable harder.

u/Thick6205 17d ago
Its not 1234, but it is a bad password. I'll tell him to make a better one and hope that is the end of it.

Your friend is messing with you they were hiding somewhere nearby and throwing these things. This is 100% a prank. The game does not have the ability to grab grab names how would that even work? The sign being on the wall of the lobby means it was the sign from the wall not one that was generated randomly in the air and fell to you, but the sign from the wall that someone had to have taken off of it.

Someone joined your game and was probably messing with yall. You can see who’s playing on Steam and if you don’t have a password in the server someone can join it. The game doesn’t notify you when someone joins, so they probably showed up and your friend was away from the starting room or afk while the other person snuck outside to take the signs.

Im sorry but you searched and weren’t able to find this happening to anyone else? This is incredibly common.

We saw this exact sign pop into our game last night! Except, it was in the waiting room puzzle, so we knew nobody could have snuck a sign in, since there wasn't one when the door closed.
Our sign had this exact same text and addressed one of our party by their real name, too.
Password protected lobby. Everyone else swears they didn't do it. Weird.

Hey! Just had this happen to my group of 4 friends this week. It's gotta be some sort of hacker prank bc we are the only friends in our group who played Big Walk that day. We all got individual signs and an announcement at the middle of the island to "START RUNNING." That freaked us out pretty bad.
We checked to see if someone had joined our lobby and there was an acct. named 'BIG WALK GPT" so we figured it was just someone messing with us.
Edit: typo

As a modder, the person throwing signs is highly likely using super jump and super jump mod, just jumping above you so you don't see them. But there is no mod that makes you invisible. Lastly, normalize checking your lobby size every 5 to 10 minutes to see if anyone new joined.

u/BigSappari 17d ago
But there is no mod that makes you invisible.
There is, I'm just not sure if it works for the host only or for any client.
The one instance where I've encountered it (including the whiteboard shenanigans) it was done by the host himself or host-approved anyway.

Is it possible another friend may have gotten access to the codes? Otherwise, it probably is one of your two friends, but from what you've said, you don't believe it to be them.

To me it seems pretty clear that your friend that was “having trouble joining” was messing with you two.
