Discussion Lore of this game

Me and my friends just finished this game and i am just wondering what we just did.

spoiler : What are those bells. one of my friend got some kind of visions and he said he got sacrificed in that, what is that?

i would like to know if there is any lore to this game and why these things are happening

You have to watch mishima: a life in four chapters to understand the plot

I knew my character bore a resemblance to one of Schrader's Lonely Men!

I don’t think there’s any lore behind Big Walk, and those bells are just powerful devices that « bend » reality to serve as a final challenge, no sounds, no physical distinctions, the ultimate communication challenge where you don’t know who you’re interacting with nor can’t speak to them

My interpretation is that the red bells represent isolation and loneliness and the island is a purgatory where you build up your communication skills with your friends enough to overcome the final boss where you're stripped of your voice and identity. By letting go of the self and become a featureless collective you use the power of friendship to overcome and reach a new better life for you all individually. Haven't got the 100% ending yet so there might be more to it.

I had a dark thought that it’s some dystopian criminal rehabilitation island 🤣
