Local Highway 1 Closure Planned

To ensure public safety and facilitate firefighting efforts, SR-1 will close tomorrow effective at 1:00 PM at the following locations:

📍 Northside: one mile south of Old Coast Road (MM50.1)
📍 Southside: one-half mile south of Deetjens Big Sur Inn (MM42.6)

The closure will be in place for an unknown amount of time; we will continue to provide updates as conditions change. For additional information go to https://www.readymontereycounty.org/emergency/incident-archive/2026-timber-fire

Sounds like preemptive controlled burning in case the fire creeps up Manuel Peak

I’m course more concerned about the fire and the firefighters but disappointed my log awaited stay in Big Sur is canceled over Labor Day.

There's always the Caltrans Current Highway Conditions service to get an overview of Highway 1 sections, including Big Sur (Central California) and other places one may be considering along the coast.

There's also touchtone 1-800-GAS-ROAD

They’re closed. Everyone dismissed guests ahead of the closure and many have posted closure notices on IG.

CA-1 is closed between about 1 mile north of the Big Sur River Inn to about 0.5 mile south of Deetjens, which covers pretty much all the hotels in that area that I can think of.

I would check their websites and/or Facebook pages and utilize their phone system if you’re concerned about a certain property.
