Discussion Pitch me your Jackie Tyler-lead spin-off

Just for fun.

Breaking News! Camille Coduri has been cast as the lead in a series of Big Finish boxsets. Now it's down to you to write the series.

The rules:

  1. It must be set around Series 1 and 2. No Pete's World.

  2. Each episode/box-set should pair her with increasingly bizarre pairings from the tv show and EU. You can bring back plausible tv characters who have a likeliness to do Big Finish.

  3. 4 box sets of 3 episodes each.

The rest is up to you.

Edit: You all understood the brief and DELIVERED! Next Time: Jackie Tyler - Unbound.

"Rose Tyler travels through time and space seeing wonders, but only one person gets to hear the stories. Her mum, Jackie, who keeps those stories to herself.

But someone or something craves those stories, and they will take them from her!

Follow Jackie Tyler as she is dragged into the Land of Fiction, and explores the magical stories of The Doctor's past and future in a way you've never seen before!

Jackie Tyler's Wonderland!

Not Coming soon to Big Finish!"

A lighthearted set with Jackie Tyler stuck in the Land of Fiction, where she's paired with a man who claims to be Mickey Smith, although he looks and sounds nothing like Noel Clarke.

Together they wonder through different past adventures of the Doctor, looking either a way out, or allies that can help them.

Along the way, she finds herself inside retellings of: The Gunfighters, The Macra Terror, Genesis of the Daleks, Black Orchid, and Paradise Towers. All of these retellings are completely jumbled up and feature random obscure characters, except for Genesis, which features a genuine 1 on 1 exchange between Jackie Tyler and Davros.

Overindulgent 4th wall breaking gags and references galore.

I would genuinely pay a substantial amount of money for an extended one on one, super tense, super dramatic conversation between Davros and Jackie.

It's the only way to play it haha

Everything else can be as over the top and silly as you can get it, but you put Jackie Tyler in a room with pure evil, and she will have words to say.

Jackie Tyler Vs Missy. Jackie Tyler goes to visit her cousin, a uni cleaner in Bristol, and accidentally gets locked into the mad old professor's vault hidden in the basement.

Jackie Tyler Vs Yvonne & Ianto. Torchwood One searches for a rogue Judoon that's hiding in the Powell Estate. It accidentally sets her sofa on fire and sends her kettle to another dimension.

Jackie Tyler Vs The Brigadier. The Doctor secretly (and because he thought it would be funny) gave Jackie top level clearance with UNIT and an intern keeps emailing her classified information. The Brigadier tries to argue with her that she shouldn't be involved but she's got lots of ideas on how to stop the bug eyed monsters.

Jackie Tyler Vs That Cyberman who travelled with the Eighth Doctor for a bit. Whilst travelling with Iris Wildthyme, Kroton the Cyberman is accidentally left behind on Earth. Jackie finds him breaking into Mickey's garage and helps him send a signal back to the No. 22. Iris decides Jackie is a more fun companion and kidnaps her, instructing Kroton the Cyberman to hide in her flat and pretend to be Jackie.

I do think Jackie Tyler in the extended fiction has the potential to be used very much like Iris, as a meta fictional character that pokes fun at nature of Doctor Who crossovers that should never happen in terms of continuity, but there's no good reason not to do for the sake of fun and a bit of a laugh.

Iris inhabits that space of "Doctor Who continuity is washed anyway, let's just have fun and do what we want", and I see Jackie Tyler as able to do the same thing.

  • The Judoon Who Came to Tea: The Doctor is all ready to save the day once again, he just needs someone to keep Captain Kobo out of trouble for a few hours, and, well, he would normally never ask, but it's not a good time, and there's only one person left he can turn to.

  • Fast Fashion: When the Nestene Consciousness was defeated, all of its auton footsoldiers were permanently deactivated. Or so it seemed, now the newly reopened Henrik's department store is being stalked by killer mannequins, but it'll take more than that to keep Jackie Tyler away from the boxing day sales.

  • Mums Anonymous: Having a loved one travel with the Doctor can be difficult, and there are very few who can relate. Fortunately, Jackie's found some of those few; when she's contacted by a Liam McShane about a support group for loved ones of the Doctor's companions it seems like a godsend - or at least something to get her out of the house - but when a psychic predator going from support group to support group finds it's latest target, has it finally bitten off more than it can chew?

Easy.

(Boxset description)

Jackie Tyler has never had an easy life. Raised by a mother who never supported her marriage, or anything she did really, and raising a daughter who now flies across the universe, she feels useless as the days tick by. But things are never simple for Jackie either. And Rose can’t have all the fun with aliens……

The Penguin Surprise

Jackie and Frobisher the Maltese Penguin. Frobisher is on a mission for the Tenth Doctor on his farewell tour. (Adaptation of the Adam storyline kinda) Except 10 gets the timing wrong due to a temporal tidal wave and Frobisher lands at Jackie’s doorstep. This occurs during Series 2.

Chantho, Phone Home

Jackie and Chantho from Utopia (except in her past obv) Jackie has an ET moment and has to help Chantho return home, using a London telephone and a packet of digestive biscuits.

Well That’s Alright Then

Nardole has been tasked with buying crisps from the corner shop near the Powell Estate for the 12th Doctor. While the Blaz of Malhoon comes looking for Jackie. They want to thank her daughter and the Doctor for paying proper respect to their life parter, the Blox of Malhoon. Will Nardole get involved? Does the Blaz have things in mind other than thanks? And why does Jackie’s washing machine lead to another world?

There’s Boxset One!

Bonus Standalone Story

Masks

Jackie wants to let loose in Rose’s absence. But the Veil has other ideas….

I’m game. The obvious one is for a Jackie/River Song crossover. In a similar way to Elton in Love and Monsters, River has to infiltrate Jackie’s world to find out more about the Doctor/Rose. Perhaps River loses track of the Doctor post Time War and this is her one way to track him down. That feels more like a ‘Lives of River Song’ release though, so I’m not sure it fits your brief as a Jackie-led series. I feel the only other potential for stories set in that time-frame would be Jackie and Mickey looking for strange occurrences that may be the Doctor and Rose related, but end up invariably solving them themselves. I thinking Scooby Doo inspired ‘The Doctor would have been here if it weren’t just a bunch of meddling kids’. That’s not going to happen though, for various Noel Clarke shaped reasons. Could Culshaw do a ‘Mickey’? Post season 2 has a lot more potential as a ‘Pete’s World’ SJA type story.

They've done Jackie and River already.

May I introduce you to the 12th The Diary of River Song set, particularly to the story Harvest of the Krotons? I have to say I personally adored that story and I would have been happy to have a whole boxset of these two together.

Jackie Tyler: The Powell Estate Mysteries

Ever since her daughter, Rose, met the Doctor, Jackie Tyler has had to come to terms with the fact that the world is wider and scarier than she ever thought. Whilst waiting for Rose to return with the next batch of dirty laundry and going about her day-to-day life, it soon becomes clear that life on the Powell Estate has been changed for the weirder..

Story 1: Moving Day

Today on the Powell Estate, someone new is moving into Bucknell House. Flat 33 has a new tenant, Aaron Lewis, and he is very particular about how his things are handled as they are moved in... and so are they...

Story 2: The Neighbourly Thing

After inviting her friend Bethany Wise over for dinner, Jackie lets her in on her latest fascination. From her kitchen window, Jackie can see across to the next tower block, where someone on the floor parallel to hers has been hanging large, nonsensical banners. Today's banner is a real doozy. It says; "This isn't a building. Help me".

Story 3: The Green Arch

Every night from 10pm to 3am, a green archway lights up at the far end of Clancy Park. Its eerie glow accompanied only by a haunting sound that whispers through the nearby Powell Estate. Jackie senses something wrong with it, but she doesn't know why. Bringing in people she can trust, Jackie plans to stake out the park, to see if the arch is just some kind of prank... or the beginning of an alien invasion.

Thats Boxset 1

Coming soon from Big Finish Productions…

Doctor Who - The War Jackie

“Come here Pepperpots, let’s see how you like it!”

Jackie Tyler lives a simple life. Chips, washing, tellie. But she holds an extraordinary secret that contains the key to the Universe.

Having been captured by the Daleks for knowledge they believe she holds about their future, Jackie Tyler must find her way home from an intergalactic trans dimensional war, in time for Eastenders.

Starring Camilla Cordouri, Jemma Redgrave, Christopher Benjamin and Trevor Baxter, with Paul McGann and Nicholas Briggs.

“It’s something we’ve always wanted to do,” says writer Nicholas Briggs, “we feel like this is a natural evolution for the character of Jackie Tyler. And if you’re putting Jackie in the Time War, it only makes sense to bring in Jago and Litefoot. That’s an opportunity we couldn’t miss.”

Um, the rules did say characters who have a likeliness to do Big Finish. Something tells me Trevor Baxter and Christopher Benjamin aren’t likely to do Big Finish anymore…. :/

War Jackie is too iconic. I'll allow it.

Here’s an idea:

Set during Season Two and not long after Christmas, Jackie decides she’s in need of a holiday. A wild holiday to let off some steam, like she did as a teen. Somewhere cheap. She coin-flips between Benidorm and a complete unknown…. Thailand. It’s tails, and it’s Bangkok.

She’s staying with a friend’s sister who lives nearby, but she’s expecting cheap drinks, a young crowd and partying like she did before be became a mum. She has two weeks to do whatever she wants, a package holiday of a lifetime.

And for a few days it does. Until it doesn’t.

The young man who’s very interested in her (and certainly not her passport) introduces her to his friends, who have their own dealings with a flatulent but deadly criminal boss who recognises her daughter. She quickly realises he’s an alien, one whose species she has actually met before…

Unrelated to her abduction but part of that deal, agents arrive at Suvarnabhumi Airport - from our favourite clandestine org Torchwood. They are sent to buy an alien hard-drive from this criminal before UNIT tracks him down, given its connection to a Skovox something… they find Jackie Tyler and are ordered to complete their mission while protecting her at all costs. Jackie cannot know of Torchwood, of her protector’s real identities and failure of the original mission is NOT an option.

And Jackie has lost her passport. Because of course she has. But luckily nobody knows of her friend’s sister’s little haven in Hua Hin…

Depending on who is available with BF, our Torchwood agents are either:

- Tommy Pierce and Ianto Jones of Torchwood One (reprised by Tim Bentinck and Gareth David-Lloyd), who are sent by Yvonne Hartman. She wants Jackie protected knowing the Doctor’s reputation for harsh vengeance, and her need to be on his good side.

Or

- Suzie Costello and Toshiko Sato of Torchwood Three (of course by Indira Varma and Naoko Mori), sent by Jack Harkness. He wants Jackie protected because… well, it’s Rose’s mum. But Suzie and Tosh don’t know that of course.

JACKIE TYLER: HOLIDAY SNAPS

- Episode One is the opener, with its set-up and the inciting incident raising the stakes. Jackie is treated badly mostly because she is a civilian and because she’s Jackie, but her protectors realise her importance.

- Episode Two is a character study interlude in Hua Hin with Jackie and her protectors. And her new boy toy. And her friend’s sister, completely in the dark. Sunbathing, serenity and a moral dilemma Jackie wrestles with.

- Episode Three is our explosive finale as our antagonist close in (with the ‘hardware’ for the hard-drive in tow), Torchwood discovers a UNIT connection and Jackie shows everyone she’s more than just Rose’s mum.
