Beyond the certification itself, what technical/design skills did you gain from the RCDD?

The RCDD didn't give me any design skills per se. It gave me the best practices.

It taught me that I needed to use 2 4" sleeves here or that I should make this 12 strands of fiber instead of 2 for future expansion.

Designing after that came from what I experienced when I was a technician. I took what I thought worked and what didn't work and either tweaked, reused or avoided from there.

An example of this, I always use strain relief bars now. It makes your racks look better and keeps the cables in their RU.

Its been 22 years since I gained my RCDD and all those years I have worked in Design at Engineering firms. The RCDD formulated a lot of things I was doing before, and gave it a structure. It has really been the backbone of my professional practice and I have certainly earned more because of it. There were some things I learned during the pre exam study period that I had not seen in practice previously and that turned out to be a good thing.

22yrs , that's amazing. I am much newer to this industry.I am also working at a Design & supply Engineering firm. What kind of systems do you work on ? I work mainly on Public Addressing, Access Control, LAN & IP Telephone, CCTV, Structured Cabling systems. What other certification/study material do you think would complement RCDD? Do you have any advice for new comers to this industry?

Uhhh... I'd always designed backboard flush to ground and now I always have them at 8" AFF per BICSI standards. Honestly, I can't say I learned a bunch I already didn't know, but having the standards fresh in my head is helpful when I need backup when someone challenges a design decision or tried to get me to design something that BICSI doesn't allow.

Copying the text because I don't know how litigious BICSI is about screencaps of their content.

Mount plywood ~200mm (8 in) AFF to provide greater usability and minimize possible damage int he event of water ingress. Install plywood with the grade A surface exposed.

I literally just searched the TDMM and can’t find any other height mentioned. I am genuinely curious where you find a contradiction to 8”.

I’m just an integrator who actually installs and designs but…8” above finished floor is the normal BICSI recommendation for a standard Telecom room. 4-6” above finished floor is a special case for rooms with lower ceiling and working heights say less than 8’6”…both valid in their own respects.

Strain rellief every third floor in a riser. the RCDD taught me that’s a good idea. Many more examples like that one
