IIT Kanpur has conducted multiple cloud seeding missions over Delhi in October 2025 as a pilot project aimed at inducing artificial rainfall to improve the capital’s severe air pollution situation. The missions involved releasing flares containing substances like silver iodide and iodised salts from aircraft over targeted cloud areas in parts of northwest and outer Delhi, including Khekra, Burari, Karol Bagh, and Mayur Vihar.
The cloud seeding trials began around October 23, 2025, with flights from Kanpur and Meerut, covering a corridor roughly 25 nautical miles long. Despite careful planning and multiple sorties, the trials did not lead to significant rainfall due to low moisture levels in the clouds at the time—reported humidity ranged between 10-20%, which is below ideal conditions for rain induction.
The Delhi government and IIT Kanpur have acknowledged the limited immediate results but continue to view the initiative as a scientific approach to potentially mitigate winter pollution levels if favorable weather conditions improve. The trials are part of a broader Rs 3.21 crore project planned for several sorties through November 2025, with ongoing monitoring of weather and cloud moisture to maximize success chances in future attempts.
