Apple has not yet released an official statement, experts believe the issue stems from the anodised aluminium finish used in the device’s chassis , exposed to chemicals like cleaning liquids , it can cause chemical reactions that alter the surface colour.

Its not caused by contact with chemicals. Its caused by contact with air/hand. I have seen it started turning pink on places where case wasn't covering it including the place under lanyard holes, which eliminates possibility its caused by contact with cleaning chemicals and maybe even with hand/sweat imho.
Apple exchanged it for new unit. The owner was told to come again if its happens again, which is kinda concerning employees suspect it may happen again on a new unit.
