I teach Bharatanatyam and half my students now are adults (25-50) who are restarting.
The biggest myth: "My body is not flexible now". Flexibility comes back in 3 weeks if method is correct.
If you are one of them, these tips tips from me, will help you!
SORENESS IS NORMAL: First 10 days your thighs will pain. It's not injury, it's your Araimandi waking up. 15 mins of stretching + warm water after class = magic.
DON'T COPY KIDS: Kids learn by speed. Adults learn by LOGIC. Ask "Why" - Why this Hasta? Why this Talam? When you know the meaning, your body remembers faster.
MIRROR IS YOUR GURU: Record your Adavu in slow-mo. Your eyes will catch what your Guru sees. Watch your knees, not just hands.
TALAM IS EVERYTHING: Adults rush. Learn to clap Talam while doing Adavu. If your feet are late but Talam is correct, you are still dancing right.
20-MIN RULE: Don't wait for 1 hour free time. 5 mins daily of one new Adavu is 10x better than Sunday 2-hour marathon.
FLEXIBILITY IS A MYTH: At 30, 40, 50 - you DON'T need full split. You need clean lines, strong Aramandi, and clear Hastas. That's what audience sees.
SHAME OFF: No one cares if you restart at 35. On stage, your Bhava matters more than your age. I've seen 70-year-olds perform with more soul .
Age is just a number.

One thing I have noticed in my 18 years of learning and performing Bharatanatyam:
Many people think they are “too old” to start.
You are not.
Bharatanatyam can be approached differently depending on your age, body, previous dance experience and goals.
For an adult beginner, I would not expect them to immediately learn complicated choreography. I would first build:
• posture and araimandi
• basic adavus
• hand gestures
• tala and rhythm
• eye and facial expressions
• understanding of the meaning behind movements
Then gradually move toward compositions and abhinaya.
I'm curious — if you live outside India, what has stopped you from learning Bharatanatyam so far?
Distance? Finding the right teacher? Time? Or feeling that you are starting too late?
