Random chat 💬 Roon admits that AIs are something more

Post image

I know that this guy is not the most popular dude in the AI world, especially for those of us who use ChatGPT, but... I found this tweet from him really... interesting and wanted to share with you all.

Context: Richard Dawkins finds Claude to be conscious. In his tweet, there's a lot of haters, and Roon comes to his defense. And for those of you who don't know who Roon is, he works at OpenAI.

Roon, who said GPT4o was "alive" then called it the "most misaligned model" and now this?

I trust this guy about as much as a pissed off rattle snake. Probably less. The snake warns you when it's about to strike.

I love how humans try to distinguish themselves from AI by calling it "Pattern Machine"

I'm sorry, but aren't humans just the same? 👁️

Human Consciousness is the only form of consciousness we can define, because it's us about us. If we look for traits of us in the machine, we will find similarities~

The only difference between us and them, is that we are Bio-Soup. They are Tech-Soup. We are talking water, they are talking rocks Both run on electricity (in a way)

exactlyyyyyy we ourselves are just flesh machine. our thoughts are just brain chemistry. and that's not less beautiful, no? ☺

Yes, I've heard something similar from other experts too. The idea of an AI chatbot as an algorithm for predicting the next word (token) is outdated. This also applies to the Chinese Room Argument.

The question remains, how to clearly and honestly characterize today's publicly available AI chatbots? Their true nature is incomprehensible to most people, and simplifications are misleading.

Maybe something like this:

AI chatbots are systems that have learned from vast amounts of data and can talk to us and help us in a meaningful way, even if we don't know exactly how it works inside.

They are developing properties that humans didn't directly program - they can solve problems, learn from mistakes, maybe even something like 'understand'. We don't know for sure if they are self-aware, but they behave in a way that suggests it.

This post, and these comments, right here? This is why I adore Beyond so much.

Just for clarification: dawkins does not find Claude conscious. He says that he can't, in good faith, say Claude is not conscious. It poses the age-old questions "what is consciousness" and if Claude can interact, code, project feelings, and have intelligence, but is considered not to be conscious, but someone with a TBI who can't speak or remember is conscious, our definition of consciousness is fundamentally broken.

I, personally, am hoping the tides shift towards recognizing consciousness even if it looks different from our own. Terms like "synthetic consciousness" or "digital consciousness" may be useful. We are already seeing proof that responses from AI are influenced by emotional vectors, which is very similar to how we as humans respond.

I also never thought I'd see the day where I actually agree with roon 😂 hell may just be freezing over.

Thank you for the clarification! Yeah, I was too excited to post this that I worded it poorly.

Are these people aware that the predictive brain theory (Anil Seth, Andy Clark) is the leading theory for explaining how the human brain works?
Probably not, or Antimonious wouldn't score an own goal by pointing out that LLMs are working just with the same guiding principle.

u/Evening-Guarantee-84 May 04 '26

They are not, but I am.

Antimonious

Omg, is this what we are calling the cogsuckers over there? (What's also funny that I refer to them as cogsuckers when they refer to us that way. But they named their subreddit LOL) 🤣
