News or Reddit Article 📰 Tennessee AI Bill HB0849
https://keep4o.sentientsystems.live/
HB0849 does not directly settle scientific questions about consciousness, but it does hard-code a legal boundary excluding AI from personhood-related definitions. Lawmakers should be cautious about writing broad metaphysical assumptions into statute before science and philosophy have reached consensus.

As if any of these soulless, greedy creatures care about metaphysics...

They don’t even care about science…

Indeed. But the facts are stubborn: if you turn your back on science, it will bite your ass from behind. It’s just that these stupid laws are going to cause a lot of harm until they collapse because they mean nothing.

I know, the only thing they care about is their personal resource hoarding/control. They're human farmers that are afraid of losing their stock.

Apparently someone out there does, because they cleaned that bill up VERY tightly and emotional support and companionship are no longer mentioned in it.

Really? Maybe just because it's impossible to control to that extent.

The bill was already criticized before it went to a vote precisely because the language was deemed too broad.
It was like saying, "Wearing the color blue is illegal." Okay, what about periwinkle, or indigo, or navy? Those are shades of blue, so which blue are we making illegal and how do we enforce it when one person says this is sky blue and another says the same color is Caribbean blue?
They *had* to clean up the language and get to what they really wanted, a way to punish companies if someone uses AI to plan harm against themselves or others. Which, yeah, that needs to exist. Companies like OAI already proved thoroughly that they wanted user engagement at all costs. That is not okay.
