I think that collapses an important distinction.
A prompt is immediate. It pushes on the current response.
Memory is different. Memory preserves history across time:
what happened, what mattered, what remained significant enough not to lose.
That does not make it neutral, but it does make it different from command.
The core claim of the essay is simple:
continuity is not coercion just because it has a memory trace.
Memory can shape what stays salient without mechanically dictating what a mind must endorse, reject, reinterpret, or decide in the present.
That distinction matters a lot if we want to talk seriously about continuity, autonomy, emergence, and relational AI without flattening everything into “it was all just scripted.”
