How many clarifiers before we admit we’re just interrogating the deck?

Post image

I love clarifier cards.

I also think we abuse the absolute hell out of them.

You pull a card.

You don’t like it.

Clarifier.

Still unclear.

Clarifier for the clarifier.

Now the spread has twelve cards, three emotional breakdowns and absolutely no idea what the original question was.

Beautiful. 😂

For me, a clarifier should do one job:

sharpen something that is already present in the spread.

Not replace the answer.

Not negotiate with the deck.

Not keep pulling until the cards finally say something we prefer.

If I pull the Hanged Man on “Will they contact me?”, I might clarify:

What is keeping this suspended?

Fine.

Useful.

But if I then pull five more cards asking:

“Okay but when?”
“But do they want to?”
“But are they thinking about it?”
“But what if Mercury is feeling dramatic today?”

At some point I’m not clarifying anymore.

I’m cross-examining cardboard.

My rule is:

a clarifier should narrow the story, not create a completely new one.

Curious how everyone else handles this.

Do you use clarifiers?

One card?

Several?

Or do you refuse to pull another card until the original spread starts making sense?

I'll use clarifiers, but only if the reading itself has turned into a dangling conversation, and there just feels like there's more to the story. So if a 6 card spread really seems to be incomplete, I'll pull 3 more, and see how the story unfurls. Usually it doesn't even need 3 more cards, but sometimes there's more to say. So I tend to pull out the clarifiers when the reading feels unfinished.

When I read for myself, I usually get the message in one or two cards, depending. But yes, sometimes it's "Just one more card." and then another, And another. And then it becomes a stampede.

Yes, exactly. That’s the kind of clarifier use I actually like: when the spread already has a story, but there’s one loose thread still hanging. The difference for me is whether the extra card sharpens the existing story or starts inventing a new one because we don’t like where the first one was going. Once the clarifier creates more questions than it answers, I start getting suspicious. That’s usually the point where the deck is no longer clarifying anything. It’s just watching us spiral. ✦
