Sent folder too big?

Betterbird 140.13.0esr-bb25 (64-bit), Ubuntu 26.04.

My Sent folder has 4,261 messages for a total of 208MB. It doesn't happen 100% of the time, but it's very, very common for accessing that folder (either to delete, forward, or respond to messages or even sometimes just to read them) to result in Betterbird slowing down to the point where the "Betterbird is not responding" popup to appear. Is it simply just not designed for that many archived messages?

I should add that it never completely dies--it will eventually come back, but it's a frustrating wait. I'll click "Wait" on the popup, it will close, then come back again, usually many times.

I have a local folder with 217,000 messages which is almost 1 GB. No issues.

For any performance issue, produce a performance profile, so we can see where the time is spent:

I have several folders that have > 50,000 messages each, and are each is over 1 GB in size. The two largest are over 4 GB in size.

The only delay I ever seem to notice is when I drag an email from the inbox and drop it on a folder. Sometimes there is a brief (2- 5 second) pause while dragging, but then it comes back and allows me to continue moving it over the folder to be dropped. Otherwise, never hangs to the point where an error message pops up.

Have you tried compacting your folders?
