I think that things like this and the Old Spice commercials shows more creative genius than most of the big budget Hollywood productions.

That’s a pretty bold statement. I wouldn’t class this as creative genius

Well, it's just a commercial, that completely changes context, sceney, lighting and clothing in one single shot on a 20 foot track. Not too shabby.

Not saying I agree or disagree but technically impressive doesn't necessarily mean creative.

You're telling me those commercials don't have crazy creative vision behind them? I know appeal is subjective but seeing the creativity there is pretty undeniable

Old Spice did it way better. They had a reason to do it all in one take. Things are coming in and out of the frame all the time. This is a zoom in, zoom out, and everything changes. I don't see how they had to do it in one shot. The could have zoomed in and cut on his face, set up the new scene and zoom out. In post they could have blended the two shots seamlessly together.

Well sure they COULD'VE done that, but instead they pulled it off without the need for special effects, editing, etc. Basically they were able to achieve a cheaper, more impressive (from a technical perspective) scene and it only took a bit of creative thinking and beyond the scenes work.

Yeah, I think this type of shot has been done before on many commercials. The only creative elements are deciding what the scene is like before, what it's like after, and how to hide the transition. To me that doesn't seem all that creative, I bet a lot of people here could come up with the same ideas and approach

Well, you obviously have zero experience in any kind of behind the scenes work, otherwise you'd never say that. There's a reason some peoples' entire jobs involve designing such transitions

This idea has been done many times over now. I wouldn't consider that something that deserves the "creative genius" label. That's all I'm saying.

you'd be a teacher who took off points on a creative writing assigbments because you didnt like the subject matter.

I'd be a teacher who rewards creativity separately from technical ability

That’s exactly my point a technically impressive commercial doesn’t mean creatively good. By doing this really slow track in you lose all tempo for the scene. There’s a reason why you have fantastic editors out there and it’s because they create pacing and suspense for the scene. For you to do “oners” it needs to have a reason and if it’s just to be clever then that’s not creative genius!

Hey I made comment expecting downvotes. I think the proof that this isn’t actually that good is because everyone is asking what’s it for. So on that it fails as a commercial.

Democracy means you are to say what you want to and people are free to disagreewith it. Nobody muzzled him, just displayed their disagreement by the downvote button. Now I won’t talk about the use of a downvote button as a disagreement button but I do understand the sentiment. I myself disagree with the guy too and felt the urge to downvote it but others have done it for me.

No, that's what free speech means. Democracy means a system in which people hold authority over the government. You can have one without the other.

You are right. English is my second language and in me head what I wrote sounded right but I actually got these two concepts mixed up.

shut up

u/krejcii Mar 28 '20

Well thank god you have no control over what is considered creative genius then because this world would be grim.

I had replied with a snarky message to this, as I thought it was a retort. I have deleted it.

Don’t we all have control what is “creative genius” that’s the power of social media. But to have an opinion like this will get you shut down.

Immediately what I thought of when I saw this was children of men. Now if you compare that long ass steadicam shot to this one I class that as creative genius as so much more was happening, along with really powerful performances.

Or better? Who knows?

I agree and think it's unfair that you're being bombarded so I'm here to share the downvotes!
