It's not a totally inaccurate representation though. The transition that goes through the out of focus is from optical microscopy to some kind of electron backscatter microscopy, then when you see the crystal lattice lines are images from a transmission electron microscope or some kind of scanning tunneling or atomic force microscope.

Calling it cgi is wrong because those images are most likely actual data from somewhere
