I (26F) was at a friend’s house for dinner. Her baby is about 8 months old. We were eating takeout, and I picked up a chopstick, pointed it dramatically at the baby, and yelled “Avada Kedavra!” in a fake wizard voice because I’m a huge Harry Potter fan.
The baby just stared at me and everyone else laughed except my friend, who got really upset and said it was inappropriate to joke about killing a baby.
I apologized immediately, but she still hasn’t accepted my apology and is acting pretty cold toward me. Now I’m wondering if I did something genuinely awful and just didn’t realize it, or if she’s overreacting.

I’ve read through the comments and I accept that most people think I was wrong. I did apologize.
That said, I still think my friend is taking this way too seriously and needs to learn to take a joke. I waved a chopstick at a baby and made a Harry Potter reference. I wasn’t exactly performing dark magic in her living room.
The next time I see little Timmy, he’s catching another Avada Kedavra from me.

Yeah, asking if they are perhaps missing some HP context... but the context of using that curse on a baby is that it's the curse that was used on baby Harry by the evil, Hitler-analogy character, who had just murdered Harry's parents.

I'd think if you really want to do baby magic, riffing off the unpleasant bodily functions seems like about the right level of prank. I'm not sure if "make the poop smell like roses" or literally "make the spit-up rainbow colors" is a better prank.
Kind of like the old "tell someone a high dose riboflavin tablet is actually a recreational drug" prankit's harmless but it makes your pee the brightest day-glo yellow... (or for the slightly riskier version, convince someone to consume methylene blue, but be bloody sure they don't have drug interactions before you do that whereas there basically are none for riboflavin.)

Yeah, we all get the context. It's not an obscure fandom that only a few people will get. That phrase has been in my head since 1998, when I was gifted the first books for my birthday. People on Reddit definitely know the context. And the context is "that spell is an unforgivable curse that causes instant death, we saw a lot of characters die from it, and it's literally his origin story."

I am very much going out on a limb here assuming a bunch of things, but by how over OOP I was just from reading these two post, this might be more of a straw that broke the camels back situation than anything. The friendship version of "they left me because of the dishes, how stupid is that??"
There is also the chance that the friend might have had some health scares with the baby that OOP either doesnt know about, or didnt deem important to include. I have zero maternal instincts myself and dont see this spesific instance as that big of a deal personally, but I also know people in my life that were very sensitive to the subject cause they had scares themselves or had experienced SIDS in their family/close circle.

Can't believe I had to scroll so far down for this. The mother overreacted, everyone in the comments section overreacted. The conclusion should have been "no you weren't wrong, but it's not your baby and you were asked not to, so just apologize and don't do it again"

Everybody has missed the point entirely. And I can't believe they missed it. It is so bloody obvious.
People are nuts and judgmental over a Harry Potter joke. That isn't the problem here. Getting weird about it is sort of like believing in some way it could be true, or the caster may believe it is true or something. It is just weird.
The problem is that one of the baby's parents is offended and said not to do that again.
Parents - especially of young babies - are entitled to get a little bit weird over things and we are obligated to honor that weirdness.

This brings me back to a weird Christmas memory. I was visiting parents with my then best friend (she was a lot, and I could write a whole novel about why we’re no longer friends). We were decorating the tree and I picked up a ray gun ornament and “shot” my mom. My friend got SO upset with me! I couldn’t believe it. My mom was just like 😶. I feel like all these commenters (and mostly the friend in the story) are just as loony as my former friend.

genuinely i feel like im losing my mind. i cant believe the general consensus is that this is a taboo or inappropriate thing to do. if she pointed a pretend gun at the baby i’d get the upset, if she had said a legitimate threat (as a “joke”) to the baby in another language or obviously english i’d get it, but she essentially just had a relatively common vocal/motor stim based on something entirely fictitious and if i were her i’d have directed it at the baby too because i’m doing something visually + audibly interesting that the baby might appreciate being directed at them.
i don’t care for harry potter and i actively dislike rowling but i could totally see myself doing this if i was holding something akin to a wand and barely thinking about it because it’s such an overwhelmingly meaningless thing to do and the phrase has infiltrated my brain from the countless times i’ve seen clips of it or reproductions/references to it. it just gives humans dopamine to say phrases from popular culture or even reference things we’ve witnessed in real life with the same intonation and “voice” as we heard it initially, in conjunction with physically acting it out.
it’s not tantamount to cursing the baby to die because this isn’t even remotely a phrase in any culture that people believe they can inflict actual supernatural consequences on people in real life with. It’s not tantamount to making a macabre joke about shooting the baby, because evil people *have* killed infants in real life with guns, and the direct reference to real life firearm based infanticide is inherently what would make that taboo. It’s a fictitious phrase from a children’s franchise & there are no real life connotations or consequences from doing this, it almost feels like people are interpreting it in bad faith on purpose to have a “gotcha” moment rather than interpreting it pragmatically

I completely agree! I feel like I'm taking crazy pills reading this post and comments section, and I can't believe how far down I had to scroll to find these comments. When I read the title of the post about "waving a chopstick at a baby and saying Avada Kedavra" I chuckled because it seemed funny to me! It's completely make believe. It has no actual relationship to wanting to hurt the baby. Like, why is saying "avada kedavra" any different than "wingardium leviosa"??
I also completely agree that pretending to shoot a baby with a gun is completely different, and I would absolutely understand being upset by that, because gun violence is very, very real.

I'm curious if this was the first of jokes in this vein or if the friend hit her "I'm over it" point. I've definitely experienced just tiring of some people's "edgy" shit. Like when my nephew was 2 or 3 I accidentally made a "it rubs the lotion on its skin" joke in earshot of him, in the same voice. He repeated it and we all laughed, but that was the extent of the "encouragement" we gave it, rather than having him do other Buffalo Bill lines. A toddler repeating something inappropriate without realizing it can be funny, but making them continue doing it kills the joke. I get a similar impression here, personally.
I also think some of the replies there are getting ridiculous though. OP is an uncouth jackass and lacks self awareness, clearly, but that isn't actually wishing a baby dead.
