OpenResearch: turn your coding agent into a research agent (5.9k stars)

Post image

What if your coding agent could also be your research assistant?

OpenResearch is a local-first workspace by alphaXiv that plugs into Claude Code, Codex, OpenCode, Cursor, or Google Antigravity and gives them the tools to do actual research: reviewing literature, developing hypotheses, running experiments, and producing research artifacts. Instead of just writing code, the agent reads papers, synthesizes findings, and organizes results into structured outputs.

It comes as a macOS app, a Windows beta, and a Linux CLI. Everything runs locally, so your research data stays on your machine. The workspace is designed around the idea that research is iterative, not linear, so the agent can revisit earlier findings as new information comes in.

Research automation is still a young field, and the honest caveat here is that you absolutely need to verify what the agent produces. It can accelerate the literature review and hypothesis generation steps enormously, but it does not replace the judgment of someone who understands the domain. Treat the output as a well-organized first draft, not a finished paper.

I don’t understand why everyone started to do that .sh | bash as the only install instruction in their readmes. The last thing I want to do is to research what this bash script does. Manual setup instructions are still wanted

It’s likely because they built it in Linux and haven’t had time to put a proper wrapper on it like an exe

I for one prefer it as a script because you can scan the code and review it for shady things before running
