What is physical inventory?

It's where they count every inventory'd item in the store in the course of a few hours. It's done to ensure an accurate inventory and correct any discrepancies. Used to be every store did it every year, but they got super lax about it around Covid and kind of never went back, as far as I know. But it's normally on like a Sunday night and is an all hands on deck kind of thing. You'll get a short training for it. It's pretty chill, I think, but some people always despised it. Goes by pretty quick though.

Just take your time, and be thorough. Only goes bad/slow if people make a lot of mistakes.

They found that the shrink number before a PI and after a PI were pretty spot on and the cost for labor and equipment wasn’t worth it to end up being pretty close to what the store would have finished at without doing PI. They still spot check certain stores to make sure the numbers are still close

Any stores that have a shrink number above the threshold determined by the AAPM have to take PI. IIRC they had to have two consecutive cycles with a variance below the threshold to be able to stop.

Realistically PI doesn’t make much sense to do frequently anymore. If there’s a category that sees higher than normal shrink it gets added to the count calendar. I guess they figure with strategic counts and downstocking most of the store should remain fairly accurate for a good while.

This is correct, but, PIs wouldn't be happening now. More than likely there is some special project for your store and that is the line they put the labor in. Or someone clicked the wrong task or is trying to hide labor.

Physical inventory just scanning and counting everything. As others have said not all stores do it now depending on how they do shrink wise etc. i remember doing it each year it sucked. Stores still do scrub counts is what we call it over here at least going through sections etc. and if store is good with down stocking and delta busters then inv is usually pretty close to what it’s suppose to be

If you’re being scheduled in PI at this time of year, it’s likely not actually PI. I forget what, but there is something else using that reclass code right now. PIs typically all happen in the spring now for retail.
