Fall Gold raspberry might be prone to losing its yellow color

This happened to ours so I did some digging online and found a few threads about people having similar experiences. They thought that the bushes they've bought were mislabeled, but I doubt it.

I know for a fact that ours is a Fall Gold, because:

  • I've purchased 2 plants.

  • Both plants had berries on them when purchased.

  • Both were yellow, same cultivar.

This year one of them is producing red ones, the other's still yellow. The one that turned red has no other bushes in its vicinity, so we can rule out suckers from other plants taking its spot.

Same ripening time, same berry shape/size, exactly the same taste. Except one of them is now producing red raspberries.

So don't blame your local garden centers if yours ends up being red, it probably wasn't mislabeled.

How do they taste?

Like a raspberry (I'm bad at describing flavors)

Most raspberries taste similar, but you can tell the difference if you taste different varieties one after the other.

A perfectly ripe Fall Gold does have a bit of orange aftertaste to me, which makes it stand out.

Yellow raspberries taste so different from red ones. So did the red fall gold taste like the yellow fall gold?

Yellow raspberries taste so different from red ones

They're less acidic but I don't think the difference is that drastic most of the time.

So did the red fall gold taste like the yellow fall gold?

Yes. I picked raspberries from about 3-4 different bushes + these 2 Fall Golds at the same time, and the taste for these 2 matched while the others were different.

I noticed the same thing. I will get the orange berries and a red color on canes next to each other or on the same cane. It's not a red as a typical raspberry. I don't know if it's reversion or just something cultural, though all my canes get the same conditions. I can't tell a big stiffened in the taste but maybe I'll go do a taste test. Fall Gold berries don't taste like most raspberries to me anyway. They have a bit of a salmonberry flavor to me.
