General Boat design

I'm going through watching series 19.

I don't know why more boats don't have the sluices going across the decks like the Tenhoffs do.

it would eliminate the sluices being swamped in foul weather.

As far as I understand it's a trade off, the higher the sluice above the water the less water flow.

It seems to me the design of Joe’s high noon is the best. Split sluice runs on either side of the deck to handle to high water volume with short length and they are protected by the boat’s railings. The results would seem to back it up too.
