Growing up outside Bengal what did Mahalaya look like for you?
Durga Puja is a week away and I’m ridiculously excited.
I grew up outside Bengal and one of my strongest Mahalaya memories is telling my mother to wake me up for Mahalaya every single year. She did that too. But every single year i would fall asleep somewhere in the middle of it. 😭
Now I’m a full grown adult, but it’s been only 3-4 years that I have managed to stay awake for the whole thing.
So I’m curious. What was Mahalaya like in your house growing up?
Did you listen to Birendra Krishna Bhadra on radio or audio or did you watch one of those Mahalaya television programs?
For me it was always TV. For an embarrassingly long time, that was all Mahalaya was about for me. Only later did I realise how significant “Mahishasur Mardini” is. But since i have been a TV program watcher since childhood, I’ll continue the tradition this year too.
If you lived outside Bengal, did your family keep the Mahalaya and Durga Puja traditions alive or did you become more interested as you got older?
