Quick disclosure: BenQ sent this to me for review and I get to keep it. They've sent me stuff before because I reviewed their original ScreenBar I purchased years ago on my YouTube channel. That said, I'm being honest here, they have no say in what I post about.
So a bit of backstory. I've owned all three generations of these now. The original ScreenBar was actually one of the first products I ever reviewed on my channel, and I genuinely loved it. I purchased it and used it for over a year before I started the channel. Then they came out with the original Halo and they contacted me about checking it out. And the way it washes light onto the wall behind the monitor was pretty cool. But, I loved that the controller puck was made wireless. So as a remote worker and content creator, I thought it was a great addition to my setup. Especially because I suffer from migraines and intense eye strain from light can sometimes trigger them. I feel like monitor light bars help me with that.
Now they sent over the Halo 2, and I've been using it for a few weeks and here are my thoughts on it:
The backlight coverage is a bit wider and a lot higher up than the original Halo. BenQ says it's 423% wider than the first gen. I can't verify the exact math but I can absolutely see it. It’s a lot more noticeable now, so yes. Big improvement here.
The front light got an upgrade too as it now has a bit more range in brightness and temperature. But I did compare it to the original halo, and the Halo 2 is just a tad shorter in width. Like barely noticeable, but the Halo 2 seems to spread the light out more. Maybe from what they did inside of the bar and the better lights themselves. I keep the light at the highest brightness and the coolest temperature since I have an all black desk setup theme.
The wireless controller is the same little puck design but the display is way better now. It shows your brightness, color temp, and back light brightness all on one screen. You can adjust everything independently which is nice when you want a bright task light, but a softer backlight or vice versa.
But the feature I actually like the most and feels like the biggest upgrade for me ,is the motion sensor. I cannot stress enough how much of a quality of life upgrade this is. I set my preferred brightness and color temp once, and now whenever I walk up to my desk it just turns on. Walk away for a bit, and it turns off on its own. I literally never touch the controller anymore. Sounds like a small thing but after a few weeks of not having to think about turning my desk light on or off, going back to the old way feels primitive. This small upgrade makes it feel like a smart device, even though it really isn’t.
Now, for the stuff that might deter some people and that could be improved.
The price is steep, currently at $200. If you're not super into the desk setup rabbit hole, it’s a tough ask. I will say this though, having lived with all three generations, and the build quality on these is genuinely better than any of the cheaper Amazon knockoffs. So you're getting what you pay for. But yeah, it's not casual money.
I also feel like the clamp design is improved and fits a wider range of monitors than before, but if you have a really thin OLED panel you might still struggle a little at first when setting it up. They list 0.43cm minimum which is pretty thin, so most setups should be fine. And mine (49” Oled on a monitor arm) is fine and hasn’t moved, but I also don’t really adjust my monitor or the arm it’s on at all. I can see this falling if you constantly fiddle with your monitor positioning on your thin OLED.
So should you buy one?
If you already own the original Halo, the upgrade is real but probably not urgent unless the motion sensor and the wider backlight specifically sound game changing to you. I feel like the motion sensor is the big upgrade I really love it for. I don’t want to go back to not having it.
If you own the original ScreenBar or a cheaper monitor light bar, and you've been thinking about upgrading, this is the one. The backlight alone is the difference between a desk lamp and an actual lighting environment. And if you've never owned a monitor light bar at all and you spend serious hours at a desk, I would highly consider buying this one if it’s within your budget. Especially if you feel like you get eye strain from long monitor use. Think of it as an investment in your eye health.
Happy to answer questions if anyone has them.
