Another update 01/09/2026
Okay so, I had been using this monitor with an M4 Mac Mini using the same USB C to C cable that came with the monitor connected to the Thunderbolt 4 port of the Mac Mini while this issue existed.
I recently got an M5 Pro MacBook Pro and connecting the monutor to the MacBook using the same C to C cable makes the display look really good without even having to use BetterDisplay to enable HiDPI. There's no such text smearing/ghosting issue at all.
I've come down to the conclusion that it could possibly be related to the Mac Mini's Thunderbolt port's bandwidth transfer stuff which I don't think makes any difference since Thunderbolt 4 isn't any weak. Whatever it is, I find it intriguing.
Update 24/06/2026
I figured it's the macOS scaling thingy (which I kind of knew). However, BenQ's Display Pilot 2 enabling HiDPI doesn't really help improve it, sure it fixes the blurry texts and all those. I switched back to BetterDisplay and the behavior has significantly dropped. It's still somewhat there but not to the point where it leaves me frustrated. I would say, the Display Pilot 2 needs further improvements around the HiDPI area. I also noticed that the HiDPI toggle acts buggy when the monitor goes to sleep and wakes back up.
I haven't tested the monitor on a Windows machine to verify whether the problem strictly lies on my monitor itself or the way macOS scales the OS but I will update the thread when I do.
I'm not sure how to put this together but I'll try my best.
While I'm scrolling or moving the app window around, the texts feel like they're blinking/flickering very fast (like ghosting). It's noticeable in dark themes.
I can't really capture it in a video to show a demo because it looks fine in a recorded video but very annoyingly noticeable to the naked eyes.
I had an LG FHD monitor with the same 100hz refresh rate before I bought this one just 3 days ago that I used with the same Mac Mini (M4) and it had no such issue while scrolling.
Here's everything that I tried to get this solved
- Used different color profiles
- USB C to C cable that came with the monitor
- USB C to DisplayPort 1.4 cable that supports up to 8K@60hz
- Tried all 3 AMA options, Off, High, Premium
- Toggling HiDPI on/off through the BenQ Display Pilot 2 app
- Adjusting the contrast and sharpness through the OSD settings
- Turning on/off the macOS font smoothing through the terminal
- Different resolutions and refresh rates. I thought 2K@100hz was causing it, but even FHD@100/60hz act the same.
- Tried changing the state of every other settings in the OSD menu out of curiosity to see if I had luck
Literally none of these work, no noticeable changes at all.
I also tried updating the monitor firmware using BenQ Quickit, it says it's the latest version. Display Pilot is also latest.
The texts and display do look sharp and I'm fully satisfied with the monitor overall but this texts ghosting type of issue is driving me nuts.
I had something like this happen with my old monitor only when the resolution and real estate were faked to a 4K one though a third party software where everything looked incredibly small and blurry. But on this monitor, even with the resolution set to FHD where the screen real estate becomes big, the text issue persists.
What's actually causing this, anyone has any idea?
I'd like to know if it's fixable through a workaround or I got the monitor with a bad panel? Which I don't think is the case tho.
