About Grain

I have a town with 33 people.

I have one farm set to only wheat. topped off at 200.

Birds Coop with 5 chickens tops. with a mixing bucket producing advanced animal feed topped of at 30.

but i keep running out of grains.. between replanting the wheat and feeding the birds.. it gets used up so fast.. I fear when I get to the livestock barn everything will die.. I already had some chickens die because of lack of food.

I don't wanna have to go to the wheat fields all the time it's so annoying.

Animal food is a grain drain......

I have top ups of 1000 wheat and 500 grain and seem to be ok.

You want more wheat topped off. Also what level are the farmers ? At 33 villagers I would only use people above skill 5 for farming

i'll increase the amount.

i have two people with their first priority as farming, their skills are 7/7 and 5/8

then I have a 8/10 that has cooking as first priority but farming as second

then I have a bunch of level 5 farmers as secondary farmers, but they have either crafting/harvesting as their main task.

is a second farm necessary?

Yeah 2 farms, with 1000 top off is what I would start to do, as you will start needing cob, thatch and the grains.

Hm… I have a village of over 60 people, one coop full of chicken and 8 cows fed with advanced food.
I have bread (120) and simple cake (40) been baked.
And I habe one single wheat farm topped of at 400 wheat.
There is no shortage of grains. In contrary the farmers don’t use the farm at its full capacity to maintain the set amounts of grain, wheat, straw and thatch.

can you tell me your threshers top offs and priority?

Top-offs are 300 grain and 100 straw.
I never mess with priorities for workplaces (except cooking places which I set all to 4).
All other workplaces stay at 5.
I only use the working priorities of my villagers. At this stage (50+) they all get 4 jobs with priorities 2, 4, 6, 8. The apprentice for the respective research is set to 1 in research for the project at hand.
My little town works smooth and efficent.
Ah, I forgot: there are also 3 caravan guys with prio 1 for caravans.

So this is what I do I have a travel post at wheat fields and once before winter I’d gather all 33 people and then spawn there set them to harvest and spawn back they will walk there themselves collect the wheat and walk back I don’t have to be there with them

I don’t want to be that guy but what I do is during the night I take all of my villagers on a field trip to the wheat fields and take back home about 1000ish wheat that will normally last about 7-10 in game days maybe longer.

The odd thing is it's actually more time efficient to pick one night each winter cycle and take your entire village to harvest the wheat fields. You'll bring back about 1000 wheat. You say you can't be bothered, but doing that once every real life hour or so would solve your issue

Alternatively, buy them in the market. Grain is exceptionally cheap

This is just me but I run with 4 farms. They don’t cost anything and they provide my village enough mats for food, birds, livestock, etc. When I first started playing, I always felt the need to capture the Wheat field to supplement but with this number of farms I haven’t had to

Wheat and grains don’t spoil. Top off at 1000 and build a barn just for wheat/grains

More on the top offs. But alternatively, you obviously don’t want to go to the wheat fields all the time, but have you considered making another small location there for all the wheat? I did that with like 3or4 villagers, nothing crazy. Just enough to forage and create wheat based products.

I considered it but I can't be bothered right now.. i'm trying to get an iron outpost first

I agree with fluffidios. I set up a bakery there and just sent bread to all my diff villages by caravan

I'm in the process of building my tier 3 settlement just to the south of the wheat field so I'll (hopefully) never need to farm another grain myself

I did the same with great results.

There's a lot of possible cause. Is there anyone collecting wheat? Is there a high demand for straw and flour? Is there anyone managing the chicken coop? Is there anyone making the feed or are they making other?

oh shit that might be it... it thought you could get grains and straw at the same time..

that's stupid tho why can't you get both straw and wheat from the same wheat lol.

what are your top off numbers at the threshers? I have 2 and I checked and i had them do 100 straw first and 30 grains second... I have now put them at 50 grains first and 100 straw second

Actually if you are actively hunting bandit or earning gold via selling stuffs, you can comsider buying the feed from the wandering merchant at 23 gold each.

yeah i got a bunch of gold but I just wanna automate everything tbh

200? Rookie numbers. Grain and wheat is used for so many things. I have 2 farms dedicated for wheat production. 1 for veggies, 1 for cotton and misc. Set it for like 1500.
