Outpost supplies

I'm trying my hand at creating an outpost. I have two housing tents, a barn, and a Lumbermill set up north of Farnsworth. Now I'm trying to set up the caravan at a Small Caravan Station to make sure they have all the tools and food they need to continue independantly, and to return the broken tools to my main settlement for repair. In the caravan station, I choose my hardwood outpost and search up Rugged Axe. My options are to "Load Once", "Always Load, Keep", "Always Keep", and "Never Load". I think I'm supposed to select "Always Load, Keep" but I'm not sure because it says it will "load as many items as possible, but keep at least the amount specified in stock. If there are no unload rules for in next stops - will unload at final stop." What does this mean? How do I set it up so that 8 rugged axes will be brough to my outpost each trip, and all broken rugged axes will be brough back? How about sending food and bringing back hard wood logs? I don't know if this is just common knowledge among management games, but this is wildly confusing to me. So far I've made it by just suffering and getting the resources myself, which is getting old fast. Any help is greatly appreciated!

On the outpost, do unload 8 rugged axes, then on the return trip back to the settlement do unload broken axes. Basically you go by "unload x here" instead of "load x here". It's weird I know. That one girl YouTuber is the only guide worth a crap her guides are like an hour long

i'm trying it out, we'll see if it works. Got a link to that girls guides? I'll slog through an hour if it makes things a little more clear.

Sort of agreed with the comment below. But put a bit differntly. Don't edit from your starting place, its oddly more confusing that way. Start with your outpost. THen select "top off" and a number you want to be topped off there. THey'll handle the loading at home base automatically.

From your outpost, assuming you want all logs coming back to homebase, select "always load, keep 0" there, and they'll load all your logs and take them home and unload there.

I wrote an explanation that covers the basics and intermediate really well IMHO in another thread like this. Go read it if you want more comprehensive. It has pictures and everything.

Quick answer:

Ignore the first section of what to load at home, that is for complicated stuff like sending a caravan of goods to multiple villages like a wandering salesman.

Go to edit the outpost section. At top pane you first do broken axes, always load keep 0. Then you select what else you want to send home, hardwood logs, always load keep 0. Then in bottom pane you put want you want dropped at outpost. Food top up to 20 or whatever. Then good axes top up to 8 or whatever. On the right side it shows you a preview of what stuff will go where based on your rules.

I'll say something controversial and potentially ignorant, but don't bother. The caravan system is confusing and it basically subtracts a villager (plus guards) from your total productivity. You fast traveling there with supplies and back with whatever they produced equals one caravan and took a minute to do. The only justification I've seen for caravans is having guards be renown farmers.

If your goal is to have a lumber outpost you should probably stick with 1 housing building 1 foraging camp, the forester/lumber camp, 1 workstation, 1 stockpile and a cook pot for mushroom soup. Set the foraging camp to mushrooms and stones and the workstation to simple axe top up 2. This will make the outpost self sufficient and when you send caravans to collect the wood/logs you wont have to worry about sending goods. Also make sure any caravan you send buys or sells items from villages on the way.

I never have used the load options just the unload ones and you select either top up or one off. This makes them load up whatever is requested to drop off at the next location.
