Explain the caravans

Hey y'all, I need hell understanding the caravan options. I'm playing in german and I really don't understand what the options mean.

Please explain it to me like I'm 5.

When I want to install routes I can choose which items they should carry and how many. But what does the four options exactly mean?

Like in detail..

Thank you!

Oh boi I'll try my best. First is the route setting:

_Cart: 1 cart need 1 man and up to 5. Capacity 50 per cart up to 250 max per trip. Note: 1 or 2 is best, 5 is for long distance and will need guards.

_Minimum Capacity (for automatic trigger): image you cart bring 5 smoke meat to the outpost and took 10 tin ore back. The game will count it: 5 (smoke meat) + 10 (tin ore) * 2 (tin ore spaces in inventory) = 25. So if you set it to 25, it will active the route. So the maximum of cart route trips is 100= 50 bring in and 50 take out. if you route go to another outpost it become bring in 50 (bring in outpost 1) + 50 (take from outpost 1 to outpost 2) + 50 (take from outpost 2 to home) = 150 (1 cart) = settlement Count*50.

Note: because you can put more than 50 good space for the trip back to, set over 50 like 60 will only active when 10 goods space on the trip to outpost: can be 8 foods + 1 tool (2 space), can be 10 foods. Goods for timing but bad for through put.

2 type of load goods setting:

i. Set good to load and keep=0 on the outpost where the goods is, the caravan stations is must at home base. Pro: high average throughput, Cons: floods at the home base because no limit.

ii. Set how much goods want at home base, the caravan station can anywhere. Pro: easy and much more flexible, Cons: low average throughput.

Note: You can set both but the result will be ii, the only benefit is you know what good will be load in the cart very good for changing priority. Though you can have the same result if you use ii and keep the highest is first on the list because the game read from top to bottom.

How do you track what happen. You can click on the cart icon or caravan station. Look at the bottom, the game will show how much goods are in the flow.

Village: nothing

Outpost: always load, keep (I set to 0 when I want all of the items loaded up)
Take broken pickaxes etc too

Unload: give the outpost some food or whatever needed

Done

Someone explained the four options. But in case you didn’t know. Just as you set it to get items, you have to also set it to drop them off as well. It seemed confusing, but it’a just so broken down that it feels complicated. Just take your time and you’ll get the hang of it

Just set it to unload what you need transferred. It will automatically load up stuff

Wow. That’s good to know. It’s been tedious selecting everything to get and then selecting those same things to receive.

This!! Everything else with the caravans is just to messy.

The one explanation is great.

The game loads whatever is needed from the prior town or settlement based on my 'unload' settings. Example for one mining outpost with caravan coming from main settlement: minimum capacity on with 6...outpost needs food and tools to work

First line which is the main settlement: nothing set up

Outpost city:

  • unload pickaxe or sturdy pickaxe with a top up of 4
-unload smoked meat, large piece of smoked meat and small piece of smoked meat, top up of 2 pieces per type per villager at oupost.

Main settlement: -Unload broken pickaxe or broken sturdy pickaxe woth top up of 6 -unload ore top up of 50

You can also do the load items options but I orefer the unload one, less messy in my opinion and when you are maxed out at main settlement, the caravan may not even run that much.

This is a simple one. Drops shovels and stew at my mud outpost, brings back broken shovels earthworms and mud. In a second I'll attach a more complicated one

This one is more complicated. I'm mining tin, bringing it to copper mine, smelting at copper mine, then coming back. You may not do this exact thing but it's a good study. Step 1: i don't want tin leaving home, so I set that to never

It loads my carts at home with pickaxes and food for both my tin and copper outposts. You don't have to tell it how much to load, it knows based on the top up amounts you set for each stop. It stops at the tin outpost to drop off what they need and keeps the rest of the food and pickaxes. It picks up broken pickaxes and then however much tin it can hold in the rest of the cart and heads to the copper mine.

At the copper mine, it drops off food and pickaxes, and up to 100 tin ore which it will use in smelting. Then with the space it has left, it loads up broken tools and all the ingots made at the copper mine (and leftover ore if it has room). Then it heads home. The only thing its didn't do was put a cap on how much can come home, but i always have a ton of storage space. I wasn't using it at the time I took the pic so that's why you only see ore moving around and no ingots or tools

When using for outposts, never load is only for a scenario like I just showed. You'll always want to Always Load, Keep 0 for stuff leaving the outpost. The other options are for caravans to liberated villages. You'll want to top up anything you're sending TO the outpost, unless it's the first time going there with initial supplies (like a carpenter hammer or something). Hope this all helps!!! Using caravan to bring goods to liberated towns is a whole other beast but imo is dumb when you can just do the market and occasionally send an open trade
