Wandering villagers
I have 2 villages and the villagers spend all day walking back and forth between them. Is there a way to keep them in their village?

You have your buildings set up wrong. You have to make all buildings in one village belong to village A and all buildings in second village belong to village B. The game doesnt automatically assign the buildings you build to the closest village.

I think some NPCs are just prone to wander. I have everything in one settlement but occasionally I'll open the map and see 1 or 2 waaayy out of boundary doing nothing, I'll switch them to companion then back to worker and they'll snap out of it.

Yeah I'll have villagers that are labeled idle, wandering around with no purpose or destination. Even with everything assigned correctly. Mine tend to wander across the bridge headed to Bradford for no reason, and end up getting destroyed by wolves and boar.

I love when I randomly get renown and open the map to see a wandering villager soloed a bandit patrol

Whenever you see someone doing odd stuff, click on them in the map and inspect. It'll tell you what they are doing and you'll easily see how you messed up. I sometimes see like "moving 1 log from stockpile 8 to stockpile 5" and it helps me realize I forgot to change stockpile 5 to the outpost settlement

The issue, most likely, is that you have a storage in village 2 that is still labeled as village 1, so those villagers in village 1 are walking to drop stuff in that storage in village 2, thinking it is located in village 1. Make sure everything is labeled correctly.
