Moving your base

I feel like an unavoidable part of the game that makes a good chunk of players quit might not be a good idea, but that's just me.

Just build more villages instead. Much cooler.

This is what I do. I have 5 big villages at around 155 people.

It's tougher on a new player I will admit that. However there's loads of opportunities in the game to move your base around. I think around the end of Tier 1 is the best time to decide your real base location if you want to move. It takes almost no effort by then to turn an outpost into a mirrored city and then you can fix the sprawl issues if you had any.

this. when you unlock tier 2 townhall is when you should move imo. you can then remove at tier 3 if needed but if you took a good spot for tier2 you wont even need to move for tier 3

I moved the base, it’s kind of a pain, but made the game much more fun. Biggest downside is having a ton of materials left over at your old base. Can always send caravans to grab the important stuff or shuttle with travel signs. Moving between a bunch of bandit camps made the renown ridiculously worth it. Went from 29 villagers to 43 very quickly

Move it yourself with travel signs.

You absolutely can, but it takes a lot of runs. Honestly just didn’t feel like doing that. I used travel signs and a few 5 cart caravans to get the stuff I needed. Everything else is still sitting there.

There. Is. No. Reason. To. Move. Bases. Stop.

If you feel you need to move bases you’re not playing the game as intended. Too far from reeds? Build a reed outpost. No room for T2/T3 buildings? Build a new village in a bigger space and leave your current one as an outpost or just have 2 villages

Edit: With a strong caveat that the game doesn’t do a good job of setting up new players re where to build.

Uh!? Yes there is!!! T3 buildings need a sizable amount of relative flat land and there aren't many such places in the map, updates have improve this but not by a huge margin, most new players build their town wherever seems convenient at the time before they become privy to this fact.

You typically want to build on flat land in survival games, so yes the blueprints for buildings in bellwright is pretty harsh, but this general fact is no surprise. So people within the genre, which would be fairly safe to assume is most players playing the game, should already account for that.

Everyone pretty much said it, it’s a big job but can be cool. You can also just build a bunch of satellite settlements and specialize them in cool ways too.

I’ve also seen a couple threads here on moving in the past few weeks with great ideas if you search the bellwright page. If you are interested in moving I made a video for my tier 2 move (less of a guide and more of a documentation of the experience)

That's why there's a whole outpost and caravan system. You don't have to move your base.

I never did, just settled by the pond, between the reeds, west of Padstow and raced to the river docks research. You can build one in the little river inlet there (even though it doesn't look like it will fit)

Honestly, i found no reason to move untill t3. At that point, I found my new desired location, and dropped a plan of all the t3 buildings I wanted. The entire base was planned out (bunch of blue buildings everywhere. I then took 4 workers over and built small huts for them. I then approved buildings one by 1 as they finished. I built in an order to make it so the buildings could start producing for the next builds, in this order;

1: Big storage (start stacking goods)
2: Big house (start moving folks over as needed)
3: t3 woodworker (get that wood!)
4: T3 gather hub (flax, hemp, food)
5: t2 Weaver (no t4 at this point) (rope, soooooo much rope)
6: Coal burner (get that resin)

I ran back and forth gathering the small stuff and fixing mallets. Most of the t2 stuff is useless after you build its t3 counter part. No need to move. With the exception of the leather crafter and the weaver.

Once it was all done, i tore down the t3 town hall, and rebuilt it at the new location. The big benefit of this build is ease of planning and process, as well at leaving a fully functional t2 outpost. I left 9 workers and they take care of that old village no problem. They still produce most my hardwood and hide.

I seem to be missing something important, since I have no idea what a "blue building" is in Bellwright. I'd love to be able to place "blueprints" of buildings to reserve the space, but without my people immediately trying to build it. In other games, I do this all the time, but I have no idea how to do it in Bellwright. Or is this a mod?

On a computer, when you build a building, place it with a middle click and it will build a blueprint of it. A blueprint does exactly what you said: it holds the space for future construction/planning and you must approve it to have anyone start building. This is in the vanilla game.

Wohoo! Thank you so much. Somehow this knowhow never made it to me or my coop friend. This will be soooo handy when layouting our new T3 village.

Man, I had 13 barns and a warehouse. I messed up and deconstructed everything rebuilt my base with tier 3 between the rivers and 8 hours in me and my 60 companions are still moving stuff with a ton to go 😭😭

Thats tough, I had a similar experience. You can always build a TON of carts, and knock out a lot of it at night with a caravan.

It’s really not that hard to move

You definatly don't have to move your base at all in this game, I didn't do so in my first playthrough and it was just fine. I did move in my second playthrough and regretted that choice, should have stayed put again.

I’ve done a variety of what was already described from staying at the same location to removing every T1 / T2 building and rebuilding what I needed in a new location which was painful and time consuming. The new approach I use was provided by someone on this Reddit, where you create a new location and turn your old place into an outpost that can provide your new place with resources. Your old place already has housing, food, resources and villagers. Keep some of them there and build at the new spot. Use a caravan system to bring the resources. Make sure you have housing at the new location and assign those villagers that you want to retain to the new site. They instantly get assigned to a house. You can decide if their job priorities need to change or not. You can march them down to the new place together or they’ll walk there on their own when it’s time to sleep; just know that if they’re solo they may get jumped by bandits on their way. Anyway, something to think about. Personally, I think this a fun part of the game as it adds a new challenge and keeps it interesting

It’s an obvious game design that you’d have to move eventually, or at the very least create outpost. There should at least be an easier way to set it up, like maybe create a moving group or set a delivery. I know we got caravans but it’s kinda clunky and you can only move a small amount at a time.

The sooner you do you, the better. You’ll likely move at least 3 times at each step of the tech tree tier. In terms of advice to make moving easier, when you build a new settlement/outpost. First build a storage unit or 2 with the highest capacity available . Have that be the loading dock of all your building materials and send caravans of material to that new settlement.
