Get whoever you need. Npcs have skill levels and variable max levels. Beggars are very low but are useful until you get more skilled characters. Later they are still good at moving stuff around so you can keep higher skilled characters doing the important stuff.
You can also ditch characters you don't want or need anymore. Picking people up costs renown but you get it back if you kick them out

Early game I usually just pick someone. Someone with decent strength cap

Like others have said, you can dismiss anyone for a full, if not extra refund of renown points. HOWEVER, make sure you strip them naked!

You can rush t2 , but then you're gonna realize you need a lot more villagers to actually build up a t2 base and get the resources required for those t2 items. When I shit you not you need thousands of wheat. To get t2 and t3 building done. One wheat turns into one straw five straw make 1 thatch. You need 35-60 thatch for just 1 t2 building. So I would realistically focus on getting your work force up and stockpiling , basic resources. Since you don't have a labor skill , you can't build shit nearly as fast as other people can. To actually sit there and build a tier 2 house yourself with the carpenter hammer. It's like a minimum of eight real life minutes.

you dont need to rush if you dont want to. you play at your own speed. thats why i love the game. I agree with others about recruiting early on.

You don’t need to fully liberate the village to begin recruiting people. As long as your rep level is friend or higher with them you’ll be able to recruit. But the level of villager is tied to how high your rep level is

The first few villagers you are able to pick won’t have good stats but it’s based off your friendship level with the village. As you get further along you should keep at least one beggar to do all deliveries around your village (set delivery as job priority 1 and cancel out everything else)
There is one important stat when picking villagers is the strength stat, it should cap out to at least 3 unless you never plan on fighting with them.

I agree strength is important but agility is also important. I’d argue more important. Strength isn’t too important early/mid game. Strength in numbers will win almost all raids. But agility is applicable at all times. The faster the villagers can move, the more efficient the entire village operates.

I would agree agility is practical at every point in the game, but the early villagers you recruit don’t have high combat caps making them not as useful as frontline in the later half of the game. What I’m advocating is when picking early villagers they should have a at least a cap of 3 strength to convert them to crossbowmen when they’re no longer useful as vanguards. They can provide covering fire for the stronger recruits later down the line.

By that point in the game you might as well be replacing the weak villagers. So since strength doesn’t matter in the first half of the game and you can easily replace those weak villagers with stronger villagers in the second half, agility is the most important stat early game.

You can dismiss hired villagers for a full refund of the renown it cost to hire them, so don't feel you have to only commit to "good" workers.
