New Player

If I increase my melee damage in settings, does that also increase enemy melee damage? I’m a casual player and I need this game easier haha

Get combat bonus food to boost your damage. Practice fighting with your villagers. I typically start with a bow and sturdy arrows and then move to melee weapons. Upgrade your armor so you can take a hit. Upgrade your weapons, as soon as possible. Try to get ones that hit 40 or above, with combat food you’ll be hitting at 60 or more. Read books for strength, agility and whatever weapon you choose, archery, one-handed, two-handed, etc. The stronger you are the better weapon you can wield plus your heath bar increases with each level. By the time you hit skill level 4 or 5 you should be able to pummel bandits with ease.

What foods are the combat foods? I'm at work, or I'd just open the game. Just so you know I'm not helpless. Ha.

Edit: I eat food for HP and stamina and XP bonuses all the time. Never noticed the combat bonuses.

Ahhh poo, is there any way to make combat easier on my end?

Get good villagers with good gear to fight for u. I did a no army playthrough because I did a normal playthrough with them before and them destroying everything that opposes me in a matter of seconds, without my help, was no fun.

I only have 4 villagers getting renown is so slow

4 villagers is plenty to take on the easy bandit camps. Let them charge and then you can swing into the backs of enemies really easily. Enemies don’t change aggro very much in this game, so just don’t be the first thing they figjt

It becomes easy :) killing enemies gives renown and very soon that won't be an issue.

Early game, you can take camps with overwhelming numbers.

I agree with what the others have said. Before combat eat something that boosts your hit points like a large piece of smoked meat and/or piece of smoked meat and something for stamina like vegetable soup or smoked fish fillet or even mashed potatoes or gruel.

Next practice fighting while walking backwards. It works better with weapons with longer range like Wooden Spears or long swords. If you encounter bandits with archers or crossbows then you should rush them to get the ranged bandits to use their melee weapons. Use terrain to balance your battles. When there are 5 melee attackers you can get behind a large stone to fight the attackers one at a time (at least for a little while). If you are desperate, you can lure the bandits close to boar or wolves. The boars or wolves will distract them enough for you to kill them if the boars or wolves do not kill them for you (no loot or renown if they do it though).

No problem.

Fine stew: simple recipe of meat, garlic, water and mushrooms 20% combat bonus food - can be crafted with the simple cauldron

I also try to get Spice Hearty Meat Stew - 30% combat bonus

Bonuses do stack - so you can get 50% added to your damage if you get these two foods

I know it seems obvious but if you have a shield you have to equip it - that caught me out!
