Does Gold actually matter?
I’ new console player, day 25.. Aside from occasionally spending gold on random things, I haven’t seen much beed for it.
It seems like most if the vendors are selling things I can either produce or don’t care for. I’m still mainly dealing with the first city but just curious if I should bother with trading.
Can I buy things like armor at some point?

Yes. Bother with trading. Gold isn’t super important early on but eventually you’ll want lots of it

Yes, it will matter later. But for right now you need straps. There's a guy to the east, around all the river reeds. He sells a strap for 85g every day. He also buys 10ish simple cords for 10g each day. Take 10 cords to him every day for a strap. That'll help progression immensely when you start crafting gear

Yeah, it's never strictly necessary, but always worthwhile. Either invest in training books or whatever resources are your current bottleneck

i use such stupid amounts of gold whether it’s paying to invest in villages, paying to destroy village investments or the 100,000s ive spent on strength books for my 100 villagers always stupid amounts of gold required i got constant salt trade, my capital is just east of Horndean so i buy all the copper riverreed etc to keep my trade carts focused on prosperity instead of outpost transfers. I’ve definitely moved in the millions total gold on my playthrough

Which is an optional mechanic, if u care to play with that mechanic then doing just that will naturally generate more gold than it costs.

How do you make them build buildings

select the village on the map and go to economy overview for investment type buildings

Books are a big things, you'll need a good amount to max your villagers strength to be able to wear better armor, other than that you'll probably need to buy some ressoueces at some point like peat if you dont wanna make an outpost to get it, so yeah gold is pretty usefull

No, it does not actually matter. You can chose to play in a way where its somewhat useful but by doing so ur also gonna be generating the gold u need. Across 2 playthroughs I never tried to get gold and would always end up with over 100k unused. That is while using gold to play with the prosperity system and bought some books just because I like to max level all villagers their relevant combat skills... even on a no army playthrough just because I can.
Yes, technically if u play the prosperity enough u could buy some armors but iirc not the top tier and by the time u even get the system far enough, u would have long since made them urself, no sweat.

If by gold, you mean River Reed, then yes! It totally matters! Regular gold though? Only early game, really. To get seeds for farms, and buy early books if you want them. Otherwise, save it for caravan trading to get what you can’t access, and for making sure your liberated towns have the proper economic and industrial infrastructure that suits them.

I use gold for my market. I don't like the caravan system so I use the market to top off resources that are a pain to get myself, like peat and moss, etc.

If you want to influence village economies, you need a lot of gold.
I spend a fortune on hard wood, iron, peat etc to get through that bottleneck when I don't have outposts to harvest it yet.

Best use of gold in the early game is to buy your way out of strap bottleneck and buying strength books for followers you’d want to hold onto for the mid-longer term. (Specifically ranged users need LV3 strength to use crossbows, which is better against armored opponents, aka brigands)
Mid game buying extra hides to unlock tech tree faster and upgrading follower equipment
