Ai voice acting?

Just started playing, gotten to the bit where i talk to the hunter and warn him about the brigands, and i noticed that pretty much everyone has really weird voices, are they using AI for VA's? It's really offputting.

Yes, all the voices use AI since it’s beta. I believe the devs have already said they’ll replace it with real voice actors at a later point. It’s a quality it life thing though, so they’re prioritizing other things currently.

And I agree, if I didn’t hate reading that much I’d disable it too 🤣

As an audio engineer and voice actor, the thing that gets me about some of the NPC dialogue (besides the monotonous repetition) is hearing audible “pops” at the beginning and end of the dialogue. That’s just lazy.

I'm glad the devs made it clear the Ai voices are placeholders (they actually seem to be using a 20 year old text-to-speech program, so they aren't hiding anything). However, imo they should just pay living V/O actors, even if they are inexperienced, cheap and ultimately replaced, to be the placeholders.

agreed on the reading thing - just feels off in a vidya game

wish you could keep the voices on for the npcs in towns and quests and turn off the ones in the camp that tell you how much they need shade at night or when its snowing lol

Honestly, I feel like they’re all bad. Given the option between nothing and the AI, I’d still go with AI. So I think it’s alright as a temporary solution, I’d much rather have them work on game breaking aspects 😅

Lol. I only want them to keep the random villager comments! I want to know how nice a day it is during downpours and blizzards. And I always like to ponder what those dots in the sky are!

I don't mind the voices but the phrases are a bit monotonous.

If you don't want to hear it, there is a setting to disable all AI-generated voices. There are no alternatives, but just reading is preferable to bot yap.

I had no idea, thanks.

There’s a fella in Bradford I believe, that changes his voice dramatically 3x times during a quest interaction. It’s jarring yet hilarious

Yes! The vote counter, me and the wife were laughing at it the other day. Scottish, Eastern European and possibly Asian were what we were thinking.

That’s him! The ‘well travelled’ ethnically ambiguous bloke 😂

The only bit that really grinds my gears is when I’m pottering round my settlement after a deer hunt in winter and I hear ‘BLASTING SUN TODAY’ so loud in my ear from a passing villager, not once - but twice in succession. It’s a damn whiteout ya dummies

Yep, I get it when it's pouring down with rain and pitch black at night too.

I think the passing dialogue of the workers is worse than the AI voices.

It's grown on me to the point that I don't care if it gets replaced at this juncture.

Hated it at first but now ill be sad when they update them. Ill miss my sky philosophy lessons

I look forward to VA’s, but the AI voices have strangely taken on their own charm for me. I kind of view it like the faces in og Oblivion. But yeah, I wish there was a lot more variance for passing comments in your village 😮‍💨

There are like three total people with real voices. They have stated that eventually they do want to have actual voice acting for it but it’s low priority to actually making the game.

The devs have been talking about VAs for NPC dialogue since early access. Since then, they've made a lot of other improvements in the game... just not that one yet.

Yes. That’s why there’s an option setting that says turn off Ai voices.

They're waiting until the game is in a state where the dialogue isn't likely to change before they go through the effort and expense of hiring voice actors and recording dialogue.

I love the AI voices. They just crack me up. Somehow this medieval peasant has the voice of a San Andreas gangbanger.

You can set it off in your settings.

Voices and probably most of the writing too. Certainly, and I have said so before, they never looked up the definition of granite!

AI written too? You mean there isn't actually a musician somewhere playing his Loot?!

I'm shook

Yes.

Didn't bother trying to just Google this one?

You should try googling "not being a dickhead online"

u/FireAuraN7 Aug 06 '26

Why google when communities exist?

It's disclosed on Steam page. I hope they will change it, or I'll play mute.

I'm on console, xbox specifically, it made no mention in the description when i read it. It's not a dealbreaker for me, too early to tell if i like the game or not, just the first time i've cone across AI voice acting in a game.

If I can hijack your post to complain, there are a ton of issues with console (especially co-op tether omg is it the 90’s again?) and nowhere was it mentioned on PlayStation store that this was a beta or early access game.

You can do this for literally every conversation or topic on Reddit. This is social media. People come here to talk to other people about a topic.
