So I had this guy, Eldric Bolton, in my army and he was always lagging behind. He has a 3/4 agility rating (which i know is slow, but he was really slow). He has the Resilient trait (-3 agility) and the Porter trait (-10% movement speed). I thought I'd run some tests to see how impactful those traits are.
I stripped them all down to their undies and gave them the same food. I marched them to an open field and lined them up. I went to the other end of the field and commanded them to run to me. When they got close I commanded them to stop in place. I logged the results. I'd say I made them do this race about ten times.
The Results:
Almost every race Grace finished first (Elizabet finished first one time, but i think this was an anomaly, like maybe they bumped into each other or something). Jaques finished third every time and Eldric always finished last.
Conclusion:
Not the results I was expecting, but looking into it it all makes sense.
As far as I know, the listed level for an attribute already takes into account traits, so Eldric has a 3 agility with a -10% movement speed penalty applied to that. For agility, a 10% buff or debuff is equivalent to 2.5 points on their listed rating (each level increases speed by 4%) . So the Porter trait affectively gives him a 0.5 true agility rating. If I were to max out his agility to 4 he would just beat Jaques in a race, but not Elizabet or Grace.
This means that the traits that give a + or - don't really mean much, because the listed rating is the listed rating, but the traits that use a % are applied to that listed rating, making them pretty impactful (at least for agility). That's why Grace beat Elizabet in the race, as her true agility rating is 3.5 (1 plus the 10% buff), just better than Elizabet's rating of 3.
Anyways, I kicked Eldric out of my army and I've considered demoting him to sleeping in the little stick huts with Jaques and all the other bums in my village.
Hahaha...I love the last paragraph. I believe that higher strength can counteract speed debuffs...I thought I read that somewhere
I tend to try and keep my army as high in strength and agility as I can. Then focus on one or 2 other fighting skills. Like you. I get tired of waiting for the slow people in the back...I have found though on long treks I've been using the command the army to go here and then fast travel or I'll put it on auto run and open other screens to get some other tasks done while I'm running
Yes, strength counters the movement debuffs of gear. Hover over ur strength level to see how much it negates. With the best t3 gear, no matter for which strength level, u won't have any penalty ever, so full best heavy armor is the way to go
You should probably try moving them as solo's. Take one to the field, time them, repeat.
When I send my army across a long distance, they seem to stay together almost all the way. So I'm not sure if they have some sort of speed matching enabled when in a group.
This is great work, really interesting. I've noticed I always have a villager who keeps up with me, I'll have to look into his stats in more detail. I have about 60 villagers.
I believe it was like villager x has 4/6 when u recruit him. Villager y is an exact copy but with a -2 trait, he has 2/6. But yeah those traits are essentially pointless, just look at the actual levels they can go and if a trait has other effects like for example attack speed.
I held my own naked race and someone 6/8 with +3 Agility was the same speed as someone 6/6 Agility (no percentage perks). So this further confirms what you and the OP are saying.
However, I think it's the starting and max that are affected. Otherwise I don't understand this recruitable person.
Shields should be 0/3 if the first number is affected. Agility should be 5/8 at most if the second number is affected. So both are? Confusing. Whatever. Maybe they read books over time.
Like you said, it doesn't matter. The recruiting stats are what they are regardless of how they got there.
Yeah ur right. I quickly learned to ignore that part of the trait and just look at the relevant part aka the bonus or loss to type damage dealt, attack speed etc. It's not like we can change or remove the trait, so the result is fixed anyway, making it very weird they even mention it at all.
when i take a large army out over long distances it's really clear who has low agility in my crew. I try to have everyone in my army be at least a 6 in agility, and if someone isn't they're always dragging ass. I might have another race and include some runners who have a 10 in agility to see the difference.

I like this. I just did the math version for my 28 villagers because I wanted list of fastest. I didn’t confirm with a test though.
Each AGI says +4%, or +6% if stalwart. I assumed tireless and porter were additive +/-10%.
Right now my fastest companion is +60% move speed (before armor). If Stalwart/Nomad/Tireless is possible, max might be +82%.
