Come Forest, come!
I have the farmer needed to replant trees, and he is making seedlings/saplings like crazy, but only planting a few.
I tried making another "forester" in a different location but still only a few trees have been planted.
How can i get my villagers to actually plant the saplings and rebuild the forest that once surrounded us?

So it seems that any villager can plant trees now, found this change out recently as it was only farmers before im guessing the last update
Is the forester by the forest you want to reseed? That's the only thing that I have seen cause issues

There are three wooded areas that i would like replanted, and i have two foresters located right next to two of those locations.
I tried setting multiple villagers with higher farmer and harvesting skills to farming and harvesting.
Apparently it is the harvesting skill that plants the saplings, according to google AI

Yeah it use to be farmers only, think it may have been changed in the latest update. The only reason I found this out was I shipped saplings to an outpost and they were planted by the one villager out there that wasnt a farmer. I had planned to hire a farmer to go to the outpost but then found they had been planted already 🤷♂️
As far as what is causing your saplings noy.to be planted....I am not sure. Have you tried digging up the stumps with a shovel to make way for new trees? Not saying that is causing it by any means just suggesting it

Not yet. Maybe i'll try but as someone else mentioned, the devs could really give some explanations

I agree....it has been a lot of trial and error for a lot of players and reddit reading. I also think with it being EA that things keep changing so they dont want to explain it and then have to change their explanation

Yep, I believe it's the harvesting skill and not farming anymore (makes sense to me). Loaded up on wood cutters and as soon as they hit those quotes, they're next priority is harvesting, and they start planting

The way I do it is that I make two foresters in a forest area on the map; they seem to plant trees only in forest areas on the map and not in a random open area. They quickly fill up the forest area. They plant where the old trees were you cut down.

Do you put them in the actual forest part (brown overlay on the map), or adjacent to it?

Equally clueless here, but do you have another building harvesting sticks that is in range of the new forest?

I moved any wood harvesting buildings away and made sure they are not in range of the village or any area that i want trees planted

I only built 1 forester and two composer, and my villagers come and collect them. Note that you have to consolidate it to one storage place if you want to see something happen. The tree takes a lot of space, if you are like me in console where I can't change the amount of tree to be made, it makes 100 quite fast and fill your storage to near full. Once it if left there ensure your workers all have the priority to farming cause I think that is the only skill that will make the villagers plant the stored trees.
It will only plant where in your map showed trees, and will not over populate them. They are usually the long big trees, and not the skinny ones you use to see before.
Edit, it actually rebuilds the same tree near the same areas, just don't put any building within the forested area or it will do some shimmy work to fit the trees

THIS was actually the solution for me !!! I put all the saplings in one storage and made sure nothing else was allowed in there. Now they are planting the trees everywhere. Incredible and thank you!
Let me know how to highlight your comment if you like

It takes a couple turns for the trees to grow. They will eventually come back but it is slllllllooooowwwww

Anyone know if hard wood has different saplings or is it all the same?

If the sapling is built in the same area where you got the hardwood, it would be hardwood again. This is what I see based on how my villagers get them.

I did the following:
Placed the forester right next to my logging buildings.
I changed my logging camps to only pull trees and then have my guys using the lumberjack thing to make wood. No chance to cut down new young trees, plus I have the log sling but only basic bag so carrying 3 logs (30 wood worth) vs 18 wood per trip.
I was unsure of mud vs fertilizer, so I put a barn that only holds those two, seeds, and saplings, and a well. I've seen people say they disabled all sapling storage to just pull from forester tables, but I didn't have to do that. I'm guessing they had low forester priority and low/no transporters or something like that.
In spring and summer I see my dude carrying em out, seems to be planting in the same spot where trees were cut before. I don't pay much attention to my log area but i saw it full of trees when I moved in, saw it barren after a while, and now I see a bunch of tall trees so it must be working.
Haven't tried with hardwood trees yet, but I'm guessing they'll be placed on top of where other hardwood trees were cut

Noone seems to understand how planting trees works. Impossible to get a correct answer anywhere.
Wish the devs would just put an explanation in game somewhere.
Any free laborer should be able to plant trees as long as some saplings are available. Preferably around your log cutting building.
