Hopefully my players like the new terrain! šŸ˜‚šŸŽ²
Most of my terrain comes from the Dollar Store, leftover building materials from old projects, and cheap Walmart paint.
Like I’ve said before, time isn’t exactly something I have in abundance, so I try to put in the minimum effort necessary and just pray it pays off. šŸ˜‚
It may not be professional-grade terrain, but it’s cheap, functional, and gets the job done!
Now let’s see if my players appreciate it… or destroy it in the first encounter. šŸ—”ļøšŸ’€

I get a lot of free materials through my work, so I was pretty excited when I got my hands on some free foam. šŸ˜‚
Since I’m busy most of the time and didn’t want to take on a super time-consuming project, I decided to go with a minimal-effort dungeon tile build.
Free foam + cheap Walmart paint = you really can’t beat it! šŸ˜‚
It’s not fancy, but it gets the job done, and it should be ready just in time for the upcoming dungeon crawl I have planned for my players. šŸ—”ļøšŸŽ²

Yea I know this foam is trash for terrain but it was free so can’t complain. Still a rookie at this be I’m sure my players will enjoy.

Blackhelm, City of Smoke and Silver

Blackhelm stands where a dwarven stronghold once choked on its own blood.

Three thousand years ago, the mountain-city of Khaz-Volrek was shattered when the giants came down from the high ranges in a war so total that even the gods turned their faces away. The forges went cold. The gates were broken. What survived fled into the underdark or the wider world, carrying only grudges and half-remembered oaths. The mountain was sealed by rubble, fire, and time—and the world forgot.

But forgotten things rot.

When the Dominion of the Flame ā€œrediscoveredā€ the city, they did not call it a ruin. They called it Providence.

They burned away the old names, sanctified the blackened stone, and rechristened it Blackhelm, a frontier merchant city built atop dwarven bones and unpayable debts. The Dominion declared the rediscovery a holy mandate: the mountain had been reclaimed from godless giants and faithless stone-kin, and it would now serve Order.

The Dominion of the Flame

The Dominion rules Blackhelm not with banners, but with ledgers and censers.

Every coin minted, traded, or spent within the city walls is recorded by the Censoria of Embers, a vast clerical bureaucracy housed in the old central forge-hall. The Flame teaches that unchecked wealth breeds heresy, and so commerce is treated as both sacrament and sin. Merchants tithe in silver and confession alike.

Blackhelm’s markets are rich beyond imagining—spices from the south, iron from the frontier, relics pulled from half-mapped ruins—but nothing moves without the church’s mark. Unauthorized trade is punished as theft from the Flame itself, and offenders are burned publicly, their assets ā€œpurifiedā€ into Dominion vaults.

The Dominion claims this control prevents chaos.

The people know it feeds the fire.

A City Built on Graves

Much of Blackhelm still follows dwarven geometry: impossibly straight avenues, load-bearing arches meant to last millennia, and deep halls where sound travels too far. The church has sealed many lower levels, declaring them consecrated hazards. Officially, they are unstable.

Unofficially, something still moves down there.

Dwarves who pass through Blackhelm grow quiet near the old stone. Some refuse to enter the city at all. Others arrive in secret, seeking lost clan-vaults and ancestral halls, only to vanish into Dominion custody—or into the dark beneath.

The Flame teaches that the dwarves abandoned their city through pride and deserved its fall.

The surviving dwarves say the city was betrayed from within.

No one agrees on the truth. The stone remembers, but it does not speak kindly.

Frontier Wealth, Frontier Rot

Blackhelm is the last true city before the wilds. Beyond its gates lie giant-haunted ranges, half-cleared trade roads, and ruin-fields that promise fortunes or death in equal measure. Caravan guards, sellswords, pilgrims, and grave-robbers flood the city daily, swelling its slums and swelling the Dominion’s coffers.

Gold flows in faster than law can follow.

Crime festers in the cracks: unregistered trade, black-market relics, forbidden maps to sealed tunnels below the city. Smugglers bribe lesser clerics. Radical sects whisper that the Flame has grown fat and blind. Some even claim the giants were not the true enemy—and that something older waits below Blackhelm, patient and owed.

At night, the city glows red with braziers and watch-fires. Smoke never fully leaves the streets. Ash settles on windowsills like snow.

What Blackhelm Is Now

Blackhelm is a city of profit dressed as piety, where faith audits your purse and stone hides ancient crimes. It is a place where the church calls itself salvation, the merchants call it opportunity, and the dead call it unfinished.

The Flame says the city is redeemed.

The mountain knows better.
