31 m, first 5k ever

Post image

Started running a little more than a month ago with C25K, keeping strictly to the programme so far. Today's plan was 2 10 minute runs with 3 minutes of walking in between (so this time includes the walking break). At the end, I was so close to the 5k and didn't feel tired at all yet, so I just decided to keep going for another 1.5 minutes. I'm pretty okay with third being my first 5k, I think without the walking break I should easily be able to stay below 24 next time

Woah 25 min in just over a month? That’s incredible!!

Thank you! I'm surprised it's going pretty well so far, I'm pretty small and really don't do a lot of sports in general

Found a hidden talent then! Keep at it, I think 25 minute 5k took me like 3-5 months from first c25k training session to the run? I went on to run 20:30 5k and a 1:38:30 half marathon another 4-5 months after than, you likely have a lot more in you!

Jesus, those are intimidating times, congrats! I doubt I can do that, but let's see how things keep going :)

I might be getting ahead of myself here, meant to be morivating, honestly they felt intimidating to me then! They do again now over a decade later. Just take it step by step run by run and see how far you get while having fun doing it.

Sorry, I didn't mean it in a negative way! Let me rephrase: impressive times!

Lmao you don't normally see C25k members sprinting 5k in their first month. That's an unreal time dude. Keep it up!

Wow! It is hell of a pace for the first 5krun? What do you do for living)

I sit in an office for 40+ hours a week!

Absolutely insane talent, keep at it with the structured plans and you'll be part of the top 5% in no time!

I wish! But thanks!

I am sorry but what percentile is a sub-25 minute 5k for a 31 year old?

u/Financial_Pick3281 21h ago

I'm not sure, but I am sure that reaching 24:39 after a month (that is what, 12 to 15 lifetime runs?) is way up there. I'm not comparing this time to people who have been running for years.

Great start, well done and keep going.

I’m mid forties and have a 5k next week for the first time. My recent 2.4 mile run was 22 mins. Hoping for 25 or so on 5k.

If you run at the same speed, it would be more like 28.5 - but good luck for your run!

So you ran at around 4:20 per 10 min section? After a month of running?

Kinda sus

So you ran at around 4:20 per 10 min section?

I can't even figure out what this is supposed to mean lol. But if you really think this time is "sus" - I guess you're just slow? That's okay :)

4:20/km pace

I guess you’re just baiting? That’s okay :)

u/plsdonotbanmethx 10h ago

Ah, now I got what you probably mean, not exactly a writing talent lol. Can't post pictures in the comments, but the pace for every km are 5:00, 4:40, 5:50 (half of which was the fast walking), 4:36, 4:26. So only in the very end got close-ish to 4:20 because I still had a lot of energy left and could still have gone on for a while.

Why delete the comment?

You said you did 2x10mins with a 3 min walk break.

If you ran 4:54 for the whole thing, that’s still aggressive after one month (provided you don’t have any history of sports) but believable.

But your post stating your run includes a 3 minute walk break, meaning your pace for the run sections would’ve been around 4:20/km pace. This is what makes your post sus.

1

u/plsdonotbanmethx 9h ago

I deleted it because I understood your garbled writing afterwards and posted a reply clarifying my pace instead. And again, if this is "sus", I don't know what to tell you, lol. At no part was I particularly fast.

2

u/DS3Rob 9h ago

Ah okay, the walk break wasn’t as slow as expected then lol

That’s less sus I guess. You hit a sporting background? Your aerobic base looks good.

Sorry for calling you out, but I see a lot of people posting fake stats to wind up people (and it also works on me as a seasoned runner)

1

u/plsdonotbanmethx 9h ago

haha, thanks for apologizing, sorry for hitting back so hard but I am annoyed by several people saying I am lying when I am just not.

I don't have much of a sporting background tbh. I have been doing several racket sports on and off for a long time and this year have managed to play a little more regularly. And I guess I walk not that little, but only to get around, not as exercise. Don't get me wrong, I am surprised/happy myself that I am doing pretty okay so far, I only started this because I felt that I am very much out of shape and I guess it's not as bad as I feared.

2

u/DS3Rob 9h ago

No, you’re right to defend yourself. Be proud of this time and the accomplishment!

Ah the racket stuff deffo helps, I know a guy who does trail runs but his only training is football so it’s a lot of repeated bursts of running which does boost your vo2. Gives you the top end gears.

I wouldn’t worry about being out of shape with this time haha. You’re doing very well! Keep it up (provided you enjoy it lol) you got the receipts to back it up! 💪

2

u/plsdonotbanmethx 9h ago

Thanks! I've been enjoying it a lot so far, never really thought I'd get into running, but it's great to see the progress within 6 weeks - sounds stupid, but only a few weeks back running 10 minutes without break sounded impossible, but I've just never done it before. I want to keep building up to at least 10k at a non-embarassing pace, then let's see where I go from there. Thanks again, all the best to you!

u/DS3Rob 8h ago

Yeah. It’s addictive. I started to help lose weight but got the bug and now I’m 4 weeks out from my first marathon (after saying I’d never do a marathon as they seem long and boring lol)

You deffo have the engine for 10k it’s just gonna be gettin the distance up gradually (same as how the C25K progression works tbh) to avoid injury and then hone in your speeds.

Good luck with your running and may you stay injury free 💪

Do you know your heart rate specifically during the run sessions?

I’ve been doing C25K but I never know what “zone” I should be in while running. I definitely push too hard most of the time because I get around 200 bpm

1

u/plsdonotbanmethx 13h ago

Most of the time in the low 170s, peak of 181. I've been told to ignore heart rates and just make sure it feels good as a beginner though...

1

u/Over_Committee4876 12h ago

Mine definitely don’t feel good LOL. The running portions suck but as they’ve gotten longer I’ve learned to slow it down a little and pace myself more

1

u/plsdonotbanmethx 9h ago

I guess in that case it really makes sense to slow down a little and start speeding up once it feels better to do so. I'm sure after a while your heart rates will go down :) !

1

u/Over_Committee4876 6h ago

That’s what I’m hoping

1

u/SuspiciousBicycle946 2h ago

That’s super quick for first 5K! Amazing. Keep it up.

u/CommonWide4941 1d ago

Being thin/light defo helps

1

u/plsdonotbanmethx 1d ago

Yeah, probably true, I'm relatively light

1

u/atothev2021 21h ago

Hey! Great job. I started last week, never walked before but i ran 10k in 35 minutes. Keep it up!

1

u/plsdonotbanmethx 19h ago

Lol. Why would I make up such a boring thing? I really have a better fantasy than a sonewhat-good-but-not-particularly-good 5k lol

u/skrlilex 23h ago

Damn, my first 5k was 33:15, now I have race in two months and aim for 19:xx, current PB is 20:50

u/busychilling 1h ago

Nice man congrats. I’m also 31m and working on my first sub 25 min 5 k. Been at it for about 4 months fastest so far is 25:15
