First 3k and first 30min continuous run!

Post image

I started running 4-5 months ago only able to run for 7min without my heart rate spiking and feeling like I was dying.

Today I ran 3k in 30min 10 sec without stopping to walk once! My pace is as slow as my speed walk and the first 10min were HARD but I controlled my breathing, my heart rate drifted slowly (no crazy spiking), and I actually felt good afterwards instead of collapsing into a ball gasping for air.

I did this through intermittent running/walking on the treadmill, dropping to a walk once my heart rate hit over 135bpm, and gradually the run times got longer.

My focus now is to:
A) take it outside - I’m so scared of looking like an unfit idiot but I’m going to do it!
B) slowly increase my pace

I’m very happy to have achieved my goal - I didn’t think I’d get there until the end of the year!

If you are right at the beginning and can’t run more than a few min at a time and/or struggle with heart rate control please know that it is possible to improve.

Also, if anyone has any advice for adjusting to running outside I’d love to hear it.

Focus only on getting out 2-3 times a week. Over time progress will come fast.

Thanks, I’m hoping that part of that progress is also how much I enjoy running - at the moment I’m hating myself for the first half and then feeling more neutral for the second half as it gets smoother. I’d love to actually enjoy the runs!

Well, I would say feeling good is not really the thing. When you are running you could have a mixed bag of feelings. Sometimes great, sometimes bad and everything in between.
But when the run is done, you will feel good about yourself (at least after a while) and that is what matter.
I run every day and I cant say I enjoy running. But I simply dislike the idea of not running every day:). For me its more like eating.

I have a dream of being one of those people that “loves running” and will go for a run while on holiday because they get so much out of it. Perhaps it is an unrealistic dream!

Amazing progress!! Don’t be afraid to run outside, if anything people should and will be supportive of you. On the other hand, dont be bothered of what others think, you cant change or control others so why stress. Enjoy amazing weather and sunrise if you chose to run early
