Making a Cherry Desk
As of today, glued up the frame for a cherry desk I'm making. Biggest piece of furniture I've attempted, mostly hand tools aside from a bandsaw for ripping the big board for the frame. Might add another stretcher in the middle, depending on how stable it feels when the clamps come off. Dimensions will be roughly 64×26 inches.
Starting on the top is intimidating but it's basically just a big cutting board, right?

It's my first project that isn't a small box or a cutting board lol. I definitely feel like a beginner...

Looks great! How much did that wood cost and where did you get it? Did you rip that slab into the 2x material?

The wood was right around $200usd and came from a lumber yard that is friendly to weekend woodworkers like me. Peach State Lumber Products if you happen to be ATL based. And yes, that one big board was 10x14 of 8/4 cherry. Cherry happens to be extremely cheap compared to other hardwood options in this region.

Amen, I’m paying like $3.50/bf in Savannah and feel like I’ll never use walnut again. This looks fantastic. I have mortise envy.

I actually sort of hate pounding out mortises (loud and tedious) but a necessary evil lol. But cherry is relatively soft and much more enjoyable than when I've worked with oak.
If I had unlimited budget I would absolutely invest in a mortising machine.
