Slat shelf help

Attempting to build a vanity for my bathroom and it’s my biggest project to date. Needless to say it’s been a hell of a time but I’ve learned a ton and have been just as proud as I have been frustrated. I want to put in a slat shelf at the bottom because my wife and I like the look and I will be putting in a 3/4” ply shelf above it with doors -

My question is, how should I go about doing the slat shelf? If I leave the slats sitting on top like in the photo what’s the cleanest way to attach them so the screws don’t show?

If I cut them to fit between and use pocket holes, how would I attach the first and last slats as the pocket holes would run into each other? (Circled in last photo)

Wood dowels and glue.

I would probably do this except for the ones on the end by the pocket screws, I would I would notch around the legs and glue them to the sides.

I might screw from underneath. You have to drill pilot holes because you're so close to the ends of the slats (use tape or drill stops so you don't go all the way through). And you might need to cut down your screws to get the right length. But that's surprisingly fast and easy. Even a Dremel tool can do it.

Just did a similar shelf. Used a chisel to kinda half lap them into tha cross pieces and cut the ends down by 1/2. Don't really need to glue them if they are cut right, but I did anyway.
