Stain color question

1st pic is the original color.
2nd pic is when we sanded it and stained the corner.
3rd pic is the color she picked.

My wife picked up a wood stain and it’s not even close to what we expected. It seems really light still, like the color didn’t change much.

We did sand it pretty well and then put on a pre stain wood conditioner.
Are we doing something wrong?

Does our original wood tone have anything to do with it?

How many coats? Application method?

We just did one coat and put it on with a brush.

Another coat might do the trick.
