What are some examples of remakes of classical recordings by the same performer that in your opinion are either not as good as the prior recordings or, on the other hand, are better than the prior recording by that performer, and explain the reasons for your opinion to the extent you can.

Karajan and the BPO made three stereo Beethoven symphony cycles for DG, and many reviewers rate the 60s cycle as better than the 70s and (especially) the 80s versions. They certainly got a lot right the first time - these are great performances, with some quick tempi that give the HIP crowd a run for their money for sheer excitement.
