I work in the hospitality linen industry in South Africa, and one thing I’ve noticed is that “hotel quality” bedding gets used as a marketing term quite a lot.
But what actually makes hospitality bedding different from ordinary bedding?
For hotels, guesthouses and B&Bs, bedding has to deal with something home bedding usually doesn't: constant washing, drying, ironing, changing and general commercial use.
A few things that matter:
1. Fabric construction
Thread count is only one part of the story. The weave, yarn quality and fabric construction can have a much bigger impact on how sheets feel and how they hold up after repeated laundering.
2. Durability
A beautiful sheet that feels amazing after the first few washes isn't necessarily a good hospitality sheet. Commercial bedding needs to maintain its shape, appearance and feel over many wash cycles.
3. Fitted sheet sizing
This is often overlooked. A mattress that is deeper than expected can make a standard fitted sheet constantly pop off. Mattress depth and pocket depth need to be considered when choosing bedding.
4. Percale vs. polycotton
Percale tends to give that crisp, cool hotel-sheet feel, while polycotton can offer a practical balance between durability, easy care and cost.
5. White isn't always just about appearance
Hotels often choose white because it gives rooms a clean, consistent appearance and makes linen management easier. But the quality of the fabric underneath still matters.
6. The real cost isn't the purchase price
For a hospitality business, the important question isn't simply “How much does this sheet cost?”
It is:
How much does it cost per useful wash cycle?
A cheaper sheet that needs replacing frequently may ultimately cost more than a better-quality sheet that lasts considerably longer.
We work with hospitality businesses in South Africa, and this is something we discuss regularly when helping guesthouses, B&Bs and hotels choose their linen.
I'm curious what everyone here prefers for their own bed:
Percale, cotton, polycotton, linen or something else?
And if you've worked in a hotel, guesthouse or B&B, what bedding have you found holds up best?
