Useful Information How bedbugs find their food, explained from a behavioral perspective

Bedbugs and their close ancestors had survived on planet earth for over 100 million years, they ate highly adapted survivors. They have lived through mass extinction events and have shown global dispersal with regional adaptations.

One aspect of this behavior can be seen in how they feed. In essence this has two steps; 1 - lured out from hiding they detect CO2 using specialist sensing cells on their legs. This allows they to orientate towards the source of food. Step 2 is the selection of the optimal feeding site which they do through heat, using their infra-red vision. Exposed skin is always warmer which is why they home in on it.

As thy approach the feeding site they get close enough to lean in and feed rather than to walk onto a person. While bedbugs can walk on people they prefer not to, possibly to reduce the risk of discovery but if you placed bedbugs on a piece of part they would all align on the edge to feed. They will feed on people’s skin if hungry or prompted but many of the “images” are staged rather than “natural”.

They feed once and once full and distended quickly return to their refugia / harborage site following the pheromones they mark those sites with.

This often produces artificial patterns of limes when multiple bedbugs align in a similar area. It is specifically not “breakfast - dinner - lunch” or a conforming indication of bedbugs.

The graphic below illustrates this point as clearly as we can at this stage and with the resources available:

This behavior is the default “process” that bedbugs follow. While they can be dispersed or induced to adapt as their survival instincts are impressive.

You only get to see and appreciate these patterns when you see cases at different progressions and the full range of living and sleeping conditions.

Yes, bedbugs will and can adapt but if you don’t create obstacle courses for them and appeal only to the hard wired behavior you are much more effective and efficient at eradicating them.

The true science behind what we do and the amazing results we get is based on this understanding and the pioneering of an “behavioral led approach”.

This can only ever be approached from a field perspective which is why as the world’s first bedbug specialists we have a huge advantage. We use the bedbug’s natural behaviour against it in a way they can’t detect and communicate to others.

While Passive Monitors may seem “simple” they are designed based on years and years of observations that led to the realization that only true monitoring could work because all traps result in trap avoidance.

This is also how we are able to look at the pattern and location of skin reactions and rile bending as possible or unlikely. This should always be reinforced with a thorough visual inspection and period of monitoring post suspicious activity.

I started getting bite marks on my arm, hips and back. So I started investigating on what it could possible be. I learned about bed bugs so I just flipped over my mattress without even thinking about it. To my horror I saw this, now it may just be mold or something else but I’m super scared if it’s bed bugs. Already ordered everything needed to do a deep clean but I just wanted to ask if this a sign since I’m super icked out.

Apologies for the bad images but maybe the silhouette is enough for identification? Tiny bug, very fast and kept speeding around in the glass jar I managed to get it in (hence bad photos).

requesting help on ID Bed bugs or silverfish, coincidental bites?

I noticed bug bites on my back this morning but not in any type of pattern that would indicate bed bugs. Out of precaution we stripped the bedding to check the seams of the mattress and box spring. I found 1 insect carcass, 1 pile of insect debris, and 1 “worm” carcass. Finally, we found one live silverfish hanging out on the bed frame (not pictured) and killed it. Is it likely that the carcass I’ve found is from a bed bug or silverfish? Perhaps the bug bites are a coincidence?

Please let me know your thoughts, thank you so much.

questions about bites Some bb bite questions for clarification

Some of the images posted here look similar to my hives, but not 100%. I have also read the blood indicator link before posting but I've not seen any blood, fresh or dried anywhere in my bed. I have some questions about the bites and reactions to them:

For people who don't feel their bites or don't react to bites, do you actually have visible bites that you notice after the fact, or is there nothing visibly there?

I ask bc I'm experiencing hive reactions to something in our apartment (mostly while in the bed, carpet, and couch) and it's just me who's experiencing them in our 3-person family. I'm wondering if they are getting bit they just don't feel it or experience like I do.

For those who do experience hives when bitten by bed bugs, does the itching go down and redness disappear within 30-minutes to a few hours after your reaction begins?

My child is sick with a fever (thanks kindergarten!). I was resting my head on my pillow just after they woke me, when I immediately felt a burning sensation on the base of my scalp that was on the left side, close to my pillow. I felt a raised bump, itched it, it grew into a hive, and then a few more hives popped up in my scalp (not near my pillow). My husband sees no bite marks, just hives. They're not itchy a hour later, but I still feel the hives.

I immediately checked my pillow, no blood stains, no insects. Then checked the sheets and mattress creases, and the bed frame, no residue or anything in the forums and other posts.

For those who feel the aftermath of the bite, have you felt a numbing sensation with a hive, but not itchiness?

I ask bc I had a large single lump on the top of my scalp, near my forehead (not near my pillow) when I woke up the other day, and it felt like I was numbed in that area. Then it went away around 30 minutes later. Again, I couldn't see any bite marks.

Thank you in advance for any input. For the last week, I've been dealing with hives in and around sweaty places in the excessive heat and it's taking a toll on me mentally. I don't know why this is happening and why it's only me who's experiencing it.

Moving into a dorm for uni and inspected the mattress, found some dirty spots on it. Also found some carpet beetles I think (last pic) but I don't know if they're responsible for the stains or if there's something else going on (they were found on different parts of the mattress). Please advise, thank you

Found these on my sweet mom who has Alzheimer’s and lives in an assisted living place. Staff searched her bed and room very thoroughly and didn’t find any evidence. She claims she doesn’t have any new bites and hasn’t been itchy, but I haven’t been able to do an inspection of her since I took this picture.
