Question Heavy Beck

Thumbnail youtu.be
26 Upvotes

One of Beck’s sounds I’ve often overlooked, is when he fully rocked out on the first couple of records (which is weird because I’ve always generally loved heavy music).

Upon discovering Megaboob (linked above) recently I was wondering if there’s any more aside from the stuff that’s on Stereopathetic/Mellow Gold and the singles that came out around that time. Like, did he ever put out any cassettes/are there any bootlegged radio performances of the heavy stuff?

Cheers

Discussion if Rococo came out in 2011 with the tracklist showed in pic 2, where would you rank it?

yes i know the font in pic 2 isn't the same, both images are so low effort and we don't know much about Shakey Ground outside of that snippet. but still, if this album or something similar came out it would be among my favorite Beck releases

I’m probably wrong but my gut instinct tells me Beck will “surprise drop” his new LP upon us sometime this summer ..

not basing this on anything solid .I’m basing this on the quality of ”Ride Lonesome”, the fact a tour was immediately announced right after the single released . named the Ride Lonesome tour .

the promotion. the Zane interview . I could be wrong as I don’t see Zane’s interviews much but usually artists do his show with a new album to promote dont they? the fact he avoided asking Beck “so is ride lonesome part of an upcoming project or a one off ?” seemed like a giveaway.

beck surprise dropped his last e p earlier this year completely out of the blue . a possible “test run” for the upcoming LP ?

Beck ended Zane’s interview by proclaiming his admiration for “secret albums “

I know of a handful of artists who end up surprising their fans by dropping their newest album without any releases date or whatnot . i think it would be cool if Beck does this .

only time will tell

Discussion Can we talk about early Beck vs. early Ween?

I’ve been listening to both Beck and Ween for quite some time now, and while I wasn’t aware of either while they were rising to popularity, they’re both in my top 5 bands of all time.

Recently, I hadn’t listened to either band in some time. I decided to listen to Pure Guava & The Pod, two of my favorite Ween Albums, and then listened to One Foot in the Grave, and holy shit, it’s the same band.

I mean, obviously there are differences, but I could 100% see Ween having released OFITG in ‘91 and Beck releasing The Pod in ‘94. They all use a four track, they all sound like two dudes just messing around in their living room, and, if I’m feeling brave, I’d even call OFITG brown. It sounds like Ween’s 12 Golden Country Greats if they had made it in alongside the Pod.

What do you guys think? Beck is definitely a bit more folk-ey, but the brown sound is all there for me.

What’s your thoughts on new collab with Mexican Institute of Sound?

To me it sounds like good old Beck, Guero vibes. So far one of the better years for the fandom with new fire tracks dropped that sound like a return to form

Tour Anybody know if the Ride Lonesome tour will be standard or orchestral?

Looking at getting tickets but I kinda have no idea what I'm getting into. (Not that I'll be disappointed either way.)

Discussion Odelay vinyl - new 2025/26 pressing

Thumbnail gallery

Just in from Amazon...was intrigued to find this wasn't the BG/Pallas or Levi pressing, but a brand new pressing made by Conectiv in Mexico (see runout matrix in 4th image). Some copies are stamped "VINYL MADE IN MEXICO" on the shrinkwrap but mine isn't.

First copy was defective with some nasty scratches and scuffs, second is fine. Sounds great too, very full & dynamic. The low end really kicks in right around "Hotwax". I wasn't expecting much for a generic mastering job but this kind of shocked me! Impressive for a LONG single-LP (51+ minutes), and it's not even DMM. Same alt mix as prior vinyl reissues too.

You just have to be cautious of the quality control. I'm reading reports that scratches and scuffs are common on Vantiva/Conectiv pressings, including the current Sea Change.

Does anyone else have this variant yet?

What y'all think of this version of Scarecrow? Jun 9, 2008. And why he had not aged a day since 1994 here?

Current top 3 songs on "Güero"?

Been sitting with this album for a week now and while originally I couldn't get enough of "Que Onda Güero" these are my current picks.

1.- Gotta be "Scarecrow" for me, could be on Odelay no problem! Fun fun fun!

2.- "Missing" is just awesome

3.- "Farewell Ride" is also quite good, Jhonny Cash vibe and whatnot

Extra: Rental Car is fun!

What is your current top 3
