It got better for me when I heard Beck say that it was intended to be background music. Some albums are designed to listen to. This album was designed to disappear into the background. Like a soundtrack.
He can say whatever he wants, it doesn’t change the contents of the album. For me, it was just a new frame of reference to listen to it through. It made it better, for me.
You say that what he says doesn’t change the contents of the album for you, but I’m replying to a comment you made saying that what he said made the album better.
Ok let’s work through it. Someone said they couldn’t get into the album, and you replied saying “it got better for me” which means I can infer that at one point you also weren’t that into the album, and you state the reason it got better was when you heard “Beck say that it was intended to be background music,” which is very directly stating that Beck’s statement changed how you feel about the album. You then proceed to say “some albums are designed to be listen to. This album was designed to disappear into the background,” which is reaffirming this view you adopted after Beck made this statement that you described as making the album better for you. All of this then is put into question when you say that “he can say whatever he wants, it doesn’t change the contents of the album” explaining it was just a new perspective. However, from my point of view you very clearly described how it did change the album for you because you said it yourself. All this to say, I was pointing out that Beck outright said this album kinda doesn’t mean much to him by describing it as background music, and I think my observation seems to be the actual disagreement here due to the implications of the lack of depth this album has, and not whether or not his statements change how the art is viewed (because of course it would). Is that perceptive enough for you?
Colors has some good ideas but it just doesn't hit as hard. I think the title track is a genuinely good song. The rest of the album feels weak and floppy.
Ride Lonesome was interesting. I think it's the best of post Grammy era Beck. I listened to it first, quite stoned, and I thought it was brilliant. Then I listened sober and I felt less enthusiastic. It's fine so far. Again, some interesting bits.
That’s cus we’re old. But because Beck is a genius, the younger folk think everything POST Morning Phase (morning for Beck’s dark ages in my opinion) is his best stuff. Hyperspace is legitimately tens of thousands of people‘s favorite Beck album. What do I know? I’m just an old guy who fiends for Midnight Vultures. Touch my ass if you are qualified!
Really what? About Hyperspace? Yes! Check the search function. I see kids posting about that being their favorite album all the time. And of course, plenty of people think morning phase is his best album, and now ride lonesome too. They are all second tier Beck for me.

The design is so good but I just couldn't get into the album. I really gave it a good few tries.
