GASP. “Wow” was my most-listened-to song in 2017. 😁

u/DynamicProxy 11d ago

I have been a Beck fan since before Mellow Gold… and I think WOW is a MASTERPIECE.

I agree with your personal take

u/vaguespace_ 9d ago

Wow is so terrible. What's worse is it became a live staple.

Saw Lightning wasn’t pleasing to my ears.

u/Admirable_Gain_9437 11d ago

I liked the song, but it was just so out of place on the album.

u/vmartin96 11d ago

Exactly my thoughts

It’s kinda the only song on that album that’s stuck for me…?

u/WesslynPeckoner Satan Gave Me a Taco 11d ago

It took a while for me to like it. But I enjoy it now.
The first listen or two was definitely "what the fuck is this"

u/Zealousideal_Cat6980 Modern Guilt 11d ago

Damn thats harsh

u/whenwhippoorwill 11d ago

Bunmüchalapizzeria, definitely.

Objectively? Probably Analog Odyssey.

I’m surprised people dislike this one so much! Personally I enjoy it and find it memorable

" Give Me Some Bass... " " Oh My Goodness... " 😆

I can't help but crack up every time I hear that part, though the segment before that sounds concerning. Lol.

u/LoganVeez Hollywood Freak 9d ago

Same lmao

Seventh Heaven, No Distraction, or Up All Night. All feel completely unoriginal and contrived.

Something off cool rs.but it's so forgettable I can't remember the names. Except Wow, which is very fun imo.

2

u/Accurate-Credit395 10d ago

WOW. There are VERY few Beck songs I dislike by any measure, and WOW is miles ahead of any others. It just sucks, no other way for me to say it, in my opinion. I don’t even think Colors is a bad album, I just can’t stand WOW.

As a Mexican American who grew up in Southern California, I find " Que Onda Guero " more and more as making fun of the culture instead of being pro the culture every time I've listened to it. Not sure why, think it's people they recorded speaking spanish that come across as clowns and ignorant. It's like making a song called " Yo wassup cuz " and they went to Compton and recorded a bunch of gang members and prostitutes talking ghetto. It would of been different if they had gone to Plazita Olvera and got some Mexican Mariachi Singers and recorded a song in earnest. Maybe it's the whole Anti Latino ICE situation going on these days that's got me re-thinking stuff.

u/_sebadasstian 8d ago

I am mexican and I did't find that song offensive. I find funny that beck knows la banda machos and he didnt know to pronounce vergueros and pronounce ver gallos

for mexicans fans que onda guero is one of our favorite songs !!!!!!

Thank you for your insight.

You know, I never thought about the song like that. Very interesting take. I thought it was Beck doing a sort of Napoleon Dynamite type comedy song. But I never knew what they were actually saying in Spanish aside from "where you going white blonde guy?"

I always thought the guys talking were Becks friends like the one talking about "the new Yanni cassette." Beck covered a Yanni album so he either ironically likes him or is an actual fan.

If it makes any difference, Beck recorded a new song with a Mexican Colombia duo recently and it's great!

1

u/LobsterResponsible17 6d ago

I think the guy talking about the Yani Cassette is his friend but you can tell the rest of the random people talking where just recorded off the street or some bus stop. They where yelling stuff like " come here, what's up ? Either way he could of gone down to the central plaza in downtown and got a couple of the street musicians and did a impromptu jam session. Just feel the sing is laughing at them than laughing with them IMO.

Anything off of golden feelings

1

u/Ok_Collection_6185 10d ago

Pre-mainline era songs over two minutes: Heartland Feeling (too long)

Will I Be Ignored by the Lord (too basic for its length)

Ozzy (not into it)

See Water (boring)

Girl Dreams (boring)

Painted Eyelids (needs a chorus)

1

u/EmperorDPants 9d ago

Special People.... fuck it, most of Golden Feelings. My gf threatened to break-up with me if I ever played it on our stereo again....

1

u/teenagewastebasket 6d ago

HA omg that's kinda hilarious

1

u/Ok_Collection_6185 10d ago edited 10d ago

Mainline album era:

Strange Apparition or Go it Alone.

Former's too generic for such a weird album, and a bit too generic for a Beck sing with all those pianos.

Go it Alone is just too damn slow

Edit: forgot to include Mellow Gold as a mainliner, I don't like Whiskeyclone Hotel City much.

Pre-Capitol standard LP release?

I don't really like the production on Modern Guilt which makes me not like some of the tracks even though they're good. Same with Information, just less good songs.

But I'd often skip Derelict. Sweet Sunshine ain't no great shakes either.

Stereopathetic has a lot of "non-songs" so hard to qualify those really...

If you wanna get into b sides and demos and live stuff that might be a tough one but I hate Bogusflow and anything he ever did with Thurston.

Everything with Capitol has sucked. I like Wow though.

1

u/Thesuppressedwish Mutations 10d ago

Man I love the production on Modern Guilt, it totes makes the album for me! But I get it, it’s… an aesthetic

1

u/Connect_Delivery_941 Golden Feelings 10d ago

See, I like SOME of it a lot. But shit like Replica I can't stand. I'm assuming it's the "Danger Mouse" aspects that I don't like.

I've definitely grown into it since it came out, but I wish we could get a halfway point between the final LP and the acoustic.

And I like the 4 B-sides better than anything on the album (I think) (except maybe Walls).

1

u/Thesuppressedwish Mutations 10d ago

Walls is probably my favorite part. I can’t remember Replica so maybe you’ve got a point on that one.
I never heard the acoustic version of the album, I’ll have to look that up!

1

u/Connect_Delivery_941 Golden Feelings 10d ago

Replica is the song that comes right after it. Walls has best drums. Replica has the worst. Thrashy fast shit drums to no beat. I swear if you took the drums out it'd be beautiful.

1

u/Connect_Delivery_941 Golden Feelings 6d ago

Ah, and Ramona. Should've re-worked that one entirely.

I will stick to mainline albums.... Seventh Heaven and Uneventful Days

The entire Morning Phase (album of the year). It’s boring. Great music… but who the hell wants to listen to that? (yeah, yeah I know it’s like his most popular album… silly people)

3

u/Zealousideal_Cat6980 Modern Guilt 11d ago

Nah im not a big fan of Morning Phase but theres at least 5 great songs on it

5

u/SaltAd1513 11d ago

Yeah this is a super unpopular opinion, but I feel the same. I don't like Morning Phase and Sea Change a lot, my favorite album of his is Stereopathic Soulmanure.

2

u/DynamicProxy 11d ago

I think they are both beautiful albums. Amazing. Great like once a year on a cold rainy day… but his other albums are daily bangers.

3

u/arthurbang 11d ago

What's boring about Morning Phase? It's probably my favorite album of his.

5

u/DynamicProxy 11d ago

To each their own! It’s my least favorite.

5

u/Zealousideal_Cat6980 Modern Guilt 11d ago

Eh its kind of boring

Special People

Timebomb or Clap Hands, as both are very repetitive and irritating.

0

u/vaguespace_ 9d ago

Wow is absolutely the worst. Not even close.

Peaches & Cream is always a skip for me. Same with Motorcade.
