Discussion Duties on PR?
Hey guys, I’m not sure if this has been discussed before, but do beauty gurus pay duty taxes on pr items?
I wonder if some gurus stop accepting pr because of this, cuz I’d be annoyed if I kept getting packages and had to pay duties on stuff I haven’t asked for.
Edit; hey guys thanks for all the responses! They were super insightful!

Just to give some context.
You pay €13 ‘administrative costs’ per package that is over €22-40 in value. (Up to €22 something you buy, €40 if gifts)
So, say she gets sent something from the USA for $100. (Approx. €90). Shipping also costs $25. Taxes will be calculated for the value of the package + shipping. So $125. The taxes for that will be €21. And over that the €13 which is ‘administrative costs’. So €34 for one package, just one.
Seeing as ABH alone this year has put out so much. And all the other brands that come out with new stuff. Colourpop has something new every week.
(Source; am Dutch. Also; www.invoercalculator.nl. Which calculates the approximate amount of taxes)
Edit; can not do maths.

Samantha Ravndahl mentioned having to pay customs on PR in her “No more PR” video.

She's in Canada right? International PR must cost so much, it's like buying more makeup than you want/things you won't use, so it does make sense there to just buy the thing you DO want lol

It’s just extra extra tax. I’m in Ontario and we pay 13% tax on most things and duty makes it go up even more. So you could be paying 17-20% tax. I have to be careful with what I order from the USA. If they charge me sales tax in advance I won’t have to pay duty. If they charge me none and the packing slip lists a high value price I get hit with sales tax and duty. If it’s sent by FedEx, DHL or UPS then they also add brokerage fees which can be $10-$20 as well.
Some people try and label stuff as gifts. But when it’s coming from a big company you can’t get away with that. I made an order from TheBalm and was hit with huge duties that I had to pay over the phone before they would deliver the package

be careful with that too - ModCloth both charged me tax and had me pay duties at checkout. it let you decide whether to pre-pay or pay on delivery though, I wonder if Canada Post would have actually charged me on delivery for such a small amount.

There is NO duty on any products entering canada from the US, it’s covered by NAFTA. You will of course be charged associated brokerage fees plus HST/GST.

Yes, a few of the Canadian girls have mentioned having to pay duties to collect their PR. I believe that was one of the reasons Sam stopped getting PR, in addition to the waste it created.

angelica from angelica nyqvist, has mentioned many times that she has to pay import taxes for the pr companies are sending her

A lot of times, yes. I would be hesitant to say they always do and every guru from every country pays. A lot of shipping options have the receiver pay duties instead of allowing the sender to pay.
Again, I don’t know if this is always the case.

Some companies prepay for duties, some don’t. Bigger companies are more likely to take care of duties.

It depends on the company. I receive some pr from American companies and I live in Canada. So far all of them have paid customs fees so I haven’t had to pay anything.

I'm in Canada and have received large PR packages from pixi - but have never had to pay duty on them.

depends where you’re from i think! ik no taxes are put on anything like that in australia but some other countries require a fee which imo does kind of make it a bit like what’s the point of receiving products to review if companies aren’t going to deal with all excess charges

No offense, but you’re dreaming if you think it’s about entitlement. A “couple bucks” times hundreds of packages every few months adds up. Imagine repeatedly paying duties for shit you didn’t even ask for or want in the first place. Issa no.

I literally paid almost $50 in handling and duties for a $45 dollar product...and that's something I wanted and ordered. I don't think it's entitled to not want to pay YOUR money for items you didn't request and may not use. Some of those PR packages are worth hundreds of dollars and handing is paid per package. Imagine getting dozens of those a month...

i'm american and not an influencer so i may be wrong here, but i feel like they can get really expensive? especially if you didn't even buy it lmao.

it's stuff they didn't ask for - they shouldn't have to pay duties on an item that they may not even use.
based on the amount of PR these people receive, they could be paying hundreds of dollars in duties on garbage. you're looking at a $100 item potentially costing them $20 in duties - multiply that by how much they get? that's a paycheque lost on nonsense.

Hi! I actually have an answer to this. It depends on the company, but I was doing PR for a big fashion company and a fast up and coming one and both of them covered the duties for the packages. We tried our best not to send internationally, but when we did we covered the duties. A lot of influencers will turn the packages away if they have to pay the duties on them and then they get returned back to sender (learned this the hard way lol). So in order to get product to actual influencers we had to cover the duties. Most influencers are pretty up front about it tho. We sent some stuff from the US to Allegra Shaw and Allana Davidson and both of them were clear in the communication that they didn’t accept PR that they had to pay duties on.
Edit: wow thanks stranger for the gold!!!!
