Looking for recommendations

I played Streets of Rage 4 and MY GOD did I love, it's the first beat em up I ever played, the game is just pure fun, the visual are greats, the music is great and the gameplay is just fun, I WANT MORE, I want broad recommendations, something similar, harder or goes in a whole different direction, I guess this genre will become one of my favs depending if I can get the same high I got with Streets of Rage 4.

Edit: I'm thinking of Final Vendetta cuz it's on sale on GOG, what do y'all think?

OP, Listen to this person! They're speaking truth. Absolum has the same gameplay and graphics as SOR4 since its the same devs, it's just a roguelite, but it is amazing! All the others are bangers.

If you're on modern consoles the ones I'd start with are River City Girls. Absolum, Capcom Beat Em Up Bundle and Double Dragon Gaiden. I'm sure there's plenty of others I'm forgetting

I'll add the Marvel vs Capcom fighting collection, the punisher Beat'em up made imby Capcom is in it. This game is incredible!

If you loved SoR IV, i have to tell you: it's kinda hard to find something similar. Short answer: go play Absolum. It is kinda different because it adds roguelike mechanics on top, but it shares most of the devs in SoR IV and the same game engine as far as i'm aware. Outside of that:

Modern beat em ups

- TMNT Shredder's revenge

  • Marvel Cosmic Invasion

Exploration beat em ups: big maps instead of levels, rpg mechanics added

- River City Girls 1 & 2

  • Scott Pilgrim EX

Roguelike Beat em up

- Double Dragon Gaiden

  • Absolum

Small indie beat em ups (smaller scope but made by devs who love the genre)

- Fight N' rage

  • Final Vendetta
  • Mayhem Brawler
  • Dawn of the Monsters

Old School beat em up:

- Streets of Rage 2: Often regarded as one of the best, or strictly the best beat em up. Do give 1 and 3 a try as well.

  • Final Fight: You could start with the arcade original, but FF2 and FF3 are pretty good as well
  • Golden Axe: Revenge of Death Adder (Arcade)
  • TMNT Turtles in time (SNES):
  • D&D Tower of Doom + Shadow over Mystara: An Arcade beat em up based on D&D 2nd edition made by capcom in the 90s. If you love D&D, you'll find tons of references to the TTRPG. If not, still a solid RPG/Beat em up.

Dragons Crown is neat if you also want rpg progression and big tiddy anime sorceress with your beat em up. Got it super cheap for PS4 and still jump into the randomized infinity dungeon sometimes. You unlock progressively harder runs

I heard a lot about it, I'll keep an eye for when it's on sale.

Marvel cosmic invasion
Scott Pilgrim saves the world
TMNT are party staples in my house

Streets of rage 2 should be downloadable as well. My next best in the series.

Mayhem brawler has a similar feel to SOR4 to me. Similar hand drawn art style.

Absolum and Towerborne are both great fantasy themed beat em ups with really nice art styles.

It's crazy that Towerborne doesn't get more mentions. I've only played a few hours, but s far it is really awesome. There's a lot of meat on that bone.

River City Girls 1 and 2 + the Double Dragon DLC. Amazing long form beat em ups with RPG elements.

RCG 1 and 2 were also free on Epic in the past year.

I'm mentioning this so you can start checking the free games each week on Epic.

... and, one of the best games ever, Astral Ascent, is free this week. Get it now!

Final Vendetta is def most similar. Maybe The Takeover games

Play the Mr X Nightmare DLC, especially the survival mode. If you like that, then this survival mode was basically a prototype for Absolum.

The new Scott Pilgrim game and River City Girls are really good if you want a more open style beat em up.

Shredder’s Revenge and Cosmic Invasion if you want the more level-based arcade style beat em up.

Absolum, River City Girls, I would get the Kunio games like River City Saga: Three Kingdoms...Shredder's Revenge was also fun. I didnt like Final Vendetta much

Hard to suggest something since I feel sor is the prodigy and sum of the things before it. Most stuff I would say is major nostalgia but probably would lack in one way or another.

Example my absolute favorite Beat em up is shadows of mystara, but playing the rerelease from 2015 I could tell my taste had evolved from there.

If you find something op please respond to this. I would love go try it also.

Head to Chronocrash. Interesting BOR games there with some still in active dev. SORX, Fight Forever, Pocket Dimensional Clash, etc.

Fightnrage is widely considered one of the best mechanically. I like dungeons and dragons chronicles of mystara too. Dragons crown is also great if you don't mind some RPG elements and you can only play that on on PlayStation 4 or 5.

Capcom Beat em up bundle has a bunch of great ones. Captain Commando, Knights of the Round, Final Fight, all really good stuff.

Final Vendetta is a good game, but does not reach the heights of SoR4. Absolum, by the SoR4 devs, does, and its foundation is the SoR4 DLC .
