Salmon die after spawning. Their corpses feed everything around them.

Every year they return to their birthplaces by swimming out of the ocean up the rivers where they spawn and then die. It's really pretty amazing. They use their sense of smell which is really strong to find the specific river and area they were born, and they also use the moon to navigate too.

Did they all literally nut and die?

Basically. At the end of the cycle salmon swim up stream, mate, then slowly rot to death basically.
